beginner Hammering

i'm a beginner and i am wondering how you hameer strings ? do u just hit the strings wit your fingers or is there sum trick if u know plz tell me :confused:

You play a note on one fret (say the third fret of the E string) and while the note is still ringing, you fret another note (say the 5th fret of the E string) by putting your finger on it without picking that note.

The other way around is a "pull-off;" you play a note (say the 5th fret of the E string) and have a finger already in place on another note (say the 3rd fret of the E string); you pull the finger on the higher note off and play the lower note without picking it.
