I have these wide pickups on my guitar aprox, 2 1/2"x1 1/2" and I have been able get more speed by raising my pickup hight to aprox 1/8" below my strings
and then use the top of the pichup as a stop for the tip of my pick, essentially "dragging" my pick along the top of my pickup. This seems so easy that it's almost like cheating. Am I the only one who does this?

If you've got your hand properly anchored and stable, then you shouldn't need to do that. But I guess it's down to personal taste; I personally find it annoying as hell when my pick drags across pickups (for example on most Ibanez guitars).

Doesn't make a bit of difference for me; I pick above the neck pickup.

well, on my strat, I usually pick(and strum) in between the bridge and middle pickup.

Whenever I play the neck pickup (22frets) I find it best sound with you play exacly above the neck pickup cause thats where the 24th fret is soposed to be. So it makes for a great neck harmonic and clean tone. And good for sweeping tone.

Tuck Andress is one of the greatest guitarist alive today.
Here is a link to a great article he wrote in regards to pick and fingerstyle techniques.

I hate them too, but more because they tend to be tonal mush compared to the bridge or neck. Just more crap you don't need.
I pick generally around the neck pickup or just below it, and because I sometimes use a Teckpick which is made of aircraft aluminum, the cover of the neck pickup where it sticks out by the low E string is a bit scratched up :( oh well... adds character.
I also generally don't anchor my hand, if I played like that I'd find it inhibiting.
