+---4..4----4-----4..4----4-----4..4----4-----4..4----4--------------
+-0-2..2--X-2---0-2..2--X-2---0-2..2--X-2---0-2..2--X-2--------------

X is a mute. You rest your hand (or finger) on the string it mentions (in this case A) and pluck. It'll sound flat and dull but it makes a percussive sound that you'll find important in a lot of rock stuff.
As for the / (like 3/5 or 5/7 etc.) this is a slide and if the tab said
----------3/5-------- then you would play the 3rd fret, then while the note's still ringing, slide that finger up to the 5th fret without picking again.
If you need any more help ask :)

Yo Pat, welcome. Every number on the lines are representing what fret to play in. For example, the first note on there is a 0 so you would play that string open. The next is a chord, you would play in fret 2 on the A string and fret 4 on the D string at the same time. X means hit that string muted.
3/5 is a slide I belive, so just slide your finger up the string to that next note.

If that is how it really looks then you are in trouble. I know tab but that is just not decipherable. It just looks like some thre or four note runs and then some chords.

It looks hard, and part of the reason for that is the tab was written out badly, but, if you take a second to look at the tab itself it isn't quite so hard anymore...
the first notes you'll play are these:
--------------
--------------
--0-------0--
----2---2----
------3------
-------------
the first chord is this:
-----
--1--
--0--
--2--
--3--
-----
Which is a C major, or more commonly, a "C." Kind of ironic, isn't it, that the line you sing along to it is "Oh say can you see?" Sorry, i know that was bad :D
If you look, all the notes you're playing are notes that are in the C chord. So all that you would have to do is make a C chord, and play each individual note, starting with an open G string (or "0" as it's tabbed in this case). Then, play the second fret of the D string, and the third fret of the A string, then back down to the open G and play the whole C chord.
Hope that helps you get started. Oh, and I noticed an "S" in there, which I'm like 99% sure would mean "slide" so you'd hit the note in the first fret they mark, and then slide it on up to the second fret.

Hey Patrick!
See if you can find a book called The heavy guitar bible.Good book for basics theory, scales and such.Helped me out when I first started playing 18 years ago.I have found that learning guitar is done in steps, not a gradual curve. One day you'll try playing a certain lick or piece of a song and can't get it,no matter what.Frustrating! Then, later on,you'll try it again and it'll just come to you.Done in steps! Good luck and don't get too frustrated at first...................................................................Northwind
