Hello, newbe here!
I dont know what to buy a electric guitar or bass.
I think of buying the bass because, I don't have much time to practice and it has less strings, so I can learn to play sooner with the bass
any suggestion?

Bass isn't really easier to play, just different. However, when it comes to finding guys to play with, you'll find that guitar players are a dime a dozen, but a bass player can always find a gig.

i agree fully with LATS.
and on top of that, there's some pretty awesome bass players out there like les claypool, norwood fisher, lonnie marshall, victor wooten, bootsy collins, and a whole bunch others!
bass player rockstars have way more personality.
What sort of music are you into? It should be about which instrument appeals to you more, not about which is going to be easier. That said, guitarists are too common... the world needs more bassists ;)

Well I'm into Metal, i love the bass sound and love the guitar solos too and i think as you that guitarists are too common (my fav bassist are Steve Harris from Iron Maiden, Geezer Butler Black Sabbath and Peter Steele from Type O Negative)
I'm going to buy it (one or another) for my birthday in 3 weeks
I think bass is winning :)
thanks all

Everyone forgot (like Schmange day) the legendary Jaco! how could you all?
and what about Ryan Matinie from Mudvayne? or Marcus Miller?
forgetting a few is acceptable, but leaving Jaco Pastorius off of any list is like not mentioning Hendrix in an article about black left handed guitarists who died aged 27...

Can't forget Bocce Wagon. Their bass player is some guy who calls himself Raskolnikov.

still haven't heard any marcus miller...
and i could really care less abou someone from mudvayne, to be perfectly blunt.

Bass guitars are cool and you'll never get short of gigs. You can hit them and they don't break and they make men look hard and women look sexy. I think I might get one just for the pleasure of hitting it like Fieldy from Korn.
BTW, Steve Harris is possibly the greatest and most influencial bass player in modern music. People usually think of him as a member of Iron Maiden before people like Dave Murray or Bruce Dickinson and you can't argue about how influencial Maiden are.
Billy Sheehan is a dick. So are most of his contempories

I dunno. I've had the pleasure of meeting Billy Sheehan, and he's actually one of the nicest people I've ever spoken to. Paul Gilbert, too, is an incredible guy with a great sense of humor.

Paul Gilbert's a nice guy, but Steve Vai and Dave Lee Roth are far too arrogant for my liking

Well, at least Vai recognizes other players for their talents. And hey, he's got a lot of respect for Frank Zappa, and can't fault a man who loves him some Zappa.

Yeah, he's also got a solo album out, which, from what I hear, is very good, and he was with Mr. Big.

if his personality is like his bass playing, he probably is very dry and boring.

I was in this dilemna back when I started. I didn't know to go for guitar or bass, so I asked a friend (who happened to be a bass player), and he thought for a second about my personality, and then said guitar... so that's what I went with, and I have not regretted it once!
why don't you try describing your personality a little, then maybe we can help decide.. for example, are you energetic, or kinda laid back? do you like to be the center of attention, or are you shy? etc. etc.

I think theres more info out there on guitar, and its more fun to play it by yourself. Honestly, I think playing bass WELL would be harder than playing guitar well, but thats just my personal opinion.
Bass is a harder instrument, it's just that the bass parts are usually much simpler than the guitar parts in most modern music. To play a bass with the same technicality that guitar is often played with, would be a lot harder. That's how I see it anyway.

bass isn't easier or harder than guitar, it's different, it's a different way at looking at your playing and looking at the music you're performing...having done both, neither one is particularly harder than the other....bass offers more oppertunities, though.

well, if for personality goes I think I will be a bass player.
I'm not energetic, don't like to be the center of attention, dont talk to much, dont like to be bothered, like to do things my way, sometimes lazy...

well, going with that, I'd say bassist... but now that I think about it, that pretty much describes me too, and I'm a guitarist... so I guess go with whatever inspires you more. when you hear a guitar solo, does it give you goosebumps? and when you hear an amazing bassline, does it make you wish you could do that?
you know what, screw it, I don't know how to tell if someone should be a bassist or guitarist... I say play both!
