What's been your current strategy at attempting a solo? Have you learned any scales or lead patterns?

I guess it just depends on what you want to do with solos. In my opinion, the best way to make a solo a really well put solo is to focus on what happens under it. All the chords and notes that the rhythm hits are every bit as important as the lead itself. Complete understanding of the notes below the solo is the best bet to make the solo itself pull through victoriously. Anyone else care to elaborate on this, agree, disagree, snide remarks, anything.. feel welcome.

Well, with both of those bands, you're going to be getting some extremely fast solos. Both Zakk Wylde and Marty Friedman are incredible players, so I can understand why you might get intimidated. Just try some chromatic speed exercises and warmups before attempting solos like "99 Ways to Die." Go up and down the strings picking every note like this
A|---------1-2-3-4-
E|-1-2-3-4---------
And then 4-3-2-1 on the way down. Then move up to 2-3-4-5 etc. Occasionally change your pattern (ex. 1-4-2-3) to help with coordination.
