width between strings on Neck

Hi there,

Just picked up my first guitar but I seem to be having trouble. I know it's not suppose to be easy but I just want to check that this is not going to be a problem. When I put my fingers onto the strings they are always touching an adjacent string. I have tried looking at the room in between and my finger barely fits on a string without touching another. Is this normal? Or do I need a different guitar with a wider neck?

I think everybody finds this difficult at first, what guitar is it ?

I've just measured a fender Squire - at the first fret the distance between the strings is between 6 and 7 milimetres.
