You answered your question in your question actually, hehe.
LEARN HOW TO PLAY FIRST, distortion will only cover up your mistakes.

i know that most people will say the same, like trendkillah
but i'm not sure if it's true or not...i started with the classic guitar ,where you dont have a distortion, but in the minute i got the electric guitar i started playing with distortion, and yet when i had done a mistake i could hear it, and it's the same now

DUDE... IT DOSEN'T MATTER HOW MUCH YOU KNOW, HOW GOOD YOU ARE, HOW LONG YOU HAVE BEEN PLAYING... IF YOU HAVE DISTORTION PUMPING THROUGH YOUR AMP AND VEINS! THERE IS NOT A SWEETER SOUND!!!

You could follow justinsane's advice if you aspire to be a player like Kurt Cobain, where slop doesn't matter, but if you want to serious take your guitar playing as far as it can go, do everything the RIGHT way first, becuase it's 1000 times more hard to go back and correct bad habits then it is to form good ones. Distortion may not hide you if you hit a wrong note, but to any of those who believe it doesn't hide anything, play a fast sequence (shred if you can) on a clean channel, no effects, then on distortion. Which one is harder to get a perfectly clear tone from?
