oookay i have NO experiance with flat wound strings, i hadnt even head of them untill recently.
im guessing they would just be easier to play for a beginner, but im also thinking they would kill your tone just a bit. (i dont know these things, just implying here)
sting gauge is the width of the sting. its usually based on your first E string, so if you hear like .09 gauge strings, its cuz the E is .09 somethings wide, and the next is a little bigger, etc.
i'd recomend .10's because they still have good sound, and still arnt to hard to play. but .09's are good too- easy to play, but you lose some of that good, full sound.

Flatwound string are often used in jazz.Ive never played them myself though,so I can't say how they feel.I imagine smooth
Correct me if I'm wrong, but I think jazz players tend to use flatwound strings because they don't have that squeeking sound when sliding your fingers over them.
I tried the flatwound strings on my acoustic. They are very smooth and don't produce the scratchy noise when sliding up and down the strings.
The tone is different, not saying it's bad, just different. They seem a little brighter than regular strings. I went back to the round wound strings after that set was dead.
