Hey guys. When I was just starting playing back earlier this year, a friend of mine who is pretty good told me to learn some shell chords, but never told me what they were.... Is this common terminology? If so, what are they?

uhhh yeahhhh i have never heard of these "shell chords". do you know what they sound like? is it even possible to discribe sounds accurately?

and are you sure you didnt misshear this friend of yours?

I've never heard of a Shell Chord either....

Shell chords are chords made of the ROOT, 3rd, 7th.
so, in the key of "C" that`ll be:
[C,E,B]
which in other words is a Cmaj7 chord without the perfect fifth.
The root "C", determines the tone;
The 3rd "E", denotes the quality of major.
The 7th "B" tells you the extension.

if you make a shell chord from the "C minor scale" you get:
[C,Eb,Bb]
where:
C is the root,
Eb denotes the quality of minor chord,
Bb is the extended seventh.
Thus, we are talking about a minor seventh chord without the perfect fifth.

hmm...interesting. I've never heard the term for it...I just called it "leaving out the fifth," haha. I think it must be a guitar thing.
