i'm lookin to put pickups in a project les paul... for the neck i'm looking for something very warm and smooth, like kirk hammett-style... for the rhythm i'm lookin for something metal-ish, although i won't use a terrible amount of distortion... all in all this will be a metal guitar... what do you suggest? enlighten me...

The DiMarzio PafPro, ToneZone, the Breed, SuperDistortion, Evolution, or Fred for the bridge position
Dimarzio Paf, Paf Joe, AirZone, EJcustom for the neck
Seymour Duncan JB, Duncan Distortion, Screamin' Deamon, Full Shred, Invader, Dime, Custom Custom, Custom 5, Full Shred for bridge
Seymour Duncan '59 model, Seth Lover, alnico pro II, and even the Jazz model for neck
You are gonna need to go to the manufacturers sites to read up on the descriptions on these p/u's and listen to the sound samples. You may also want to type in "guitar pickups" on your favorite search engine.
The options are so many and so various that it would be impossible to list all of your options here. The p/u's I listed here are a very small sample of what is out there. It is very cool, and at the same time very frustrating, that today's players have such a wide choice of p/u's to choose from.
Another thing to do is to find out what the players you like are using, and then go from there.
Good luck

Seymour Duncan '59 and a dimebucker or a set of active EMG's.

I got an Invader at the neck and a dime bucker at the bridge. Works for me.

The JB and the '59 work very well together, I love them.
But yeah, I suggest you do read around on the various pickup websites before going ahead.
