hey every can sum1 plz plz help me. im a keen acoustic guitarist and have been playin about 2 yrs now and hav written a few songs but the lack a little something, i really wanna beable 2 write sum solos for them but dont really know how, cud sum plz teach me the basic to writing solos, its for acoustic music if that makes any difference, thanx

there should be a lot of different scales on the exercise part of this site. Practice many scales and when you have a beat... improvise.

Yep, you gotta be able to improvise some. And to do that yer gonna have to be comfortable in scales and licks. Taking this one step further...record your improv's and pick out the pieces you like, mix and match, and put it all together.

If you need a more basic approach, first, decide where you want the solo.
I am assuming that your songs have a basic verse/chorus/verse sturcture.
A basic solo is a variation of the verse or chorus-depending on where is is located in your song. Basic songs don't really take off on a solo with a totally new direction.
Play the melody, in notes, a few times, then spice it up, throw in a few extra notes-slide between some, play then twice in double time, play every other note an octive apart, play 3 notes then a chord-experiment. After a while, something will click and you can embelish it until you are satisified.

That's strange, I didn't realise that coherent English was required for writing guitar solos. :confused:

I feel sorry for the French, German, Spanish, Indian, Italian, Russian... oh I could go on forever!

Looking at your handle you must be a fellow Irishman, at least I don't think Damien Rice is that big outside of the country (could be wrong though!). Regards creating solos, do what the other guys said about learning scales and licks, then jam a little for a few ideas, THEN listen to the backing music and imagine what would sound good over it. Hum along with the music and then work it out on the guitar. The mind is not restricted by knowledge of the fretboard or stuck in scalar patterns so you will get much better ideas thinking up the music rather than trying to analyse a scale. Just my two cents, it works for me.
