Am I just imagining this or do amps seem to have a natural compression as you turn them up?

Is this why in studios the engineers normally make you have the amp pretty loud even though you don't really need it to be that loud?

Tube amps do in a small way, but it's mostly your ears perceiving it b/c of the loud volumes.

Studios crank the amps up b/c that's how to get the best sound out of a tube amp.

yep, turning up is all about power tube saturation. Tone also changes as you turn up (Click here (http://www.webervst.com/fm.htm) for an explanation of Fletcher-Munson curves) so it is important to rest your EQ.
