Well, I guess I'll go ahead and be the first to say hi to you. Speaking from personal experience I think it's safe to say you can still get good at the guitar without an instructor. I've never had lessons myself and I feel that I'm not too shabby when it comes to strumming around and assorted what-have-yous and what-nots. I'd say mostly takes discipline, dedication, and the desire to get better. Anyone else have any add-ons, comments, snide remarks? These are just some opinions I've developed in my course of time. Anyway, welcome aboard.
Yep ill agree with everything you said! lol Hi, welcome:)
You dont HAVE to have a Tutor, i played 11 years, and never had a lesson.....lol and dont think im too bad either. Just stick with it, and take it slowly :D

Welcome to GT! You'll be able to learn whatever you need here.
BTW, you should be ashamed of yourself talking about your mother like that! Whether she gets you lessons or not, you have no right to call her what you did. Learn some respect!

Yep. If it wasn't for her, you wouldn't exist...
As far as your question, there are plenty of resources on the net. I've been playing for 16 years and never had any real lessons. I started playing guitar before the internet was really around and I mostly learned from tablature in Guitar World magazines. You can learn technique by learning your favorite bands songs and learn theory by researching on this site and other sites on the net. I dove right in and started learning guitar by learning Van Halen songs. Probably not the best way to do it, but my technique improved very quickly that way.

Cant understand y som1 wouldn't want their kid to learn music..must be another brainwashed religious fanatic. But anywayz, you definately could learn without. Satriani did, I think...and he's, oh, one of the best.
I do however recomend getting a good one on one instructer as soon as you have the means, cuz they teach you the small unobvious things like propper posture, picking techniques, covering strings and give you priorities for what to learn first...I mean there are twenty million different things you can learn on the web, but what should you start with? A good instructer will also nip "bad habits" in the bud.
The lessons should be 3-5 months depending on you, and if you know people in bands or on the music scene in ur area, find out from them who's a good instructer...cuz it's probably somebody that taught them.
Three other quick things to ponder...1) after the lessons are over, ur probably going to have a good friend that u can call anytime you have questions, cuz it's in their interest for their student to be great! (unless their a real ah) 2) Find someone that appeals to the music you want to play and makes class interesting...for instance my instructer would spend an hour of actual learning, then show me videos of steve vai, and malmsteen to get the point across about techniques...and then teach me a pantera song cuz he knew thats what I liked. FIND THE RIGHT PERSON...don't go for some old school classical instructer that's going to teach you one chord for the day over and over again and thanks for the $30.00. 3) when the lessons are over u'll know a heck of alot, but ur still going to be NOWHERE near what u want to be...takes time and lotz of practice (as Im finding out)..unless ur a prodigy..then hey more power to you!!!!

i love you man. in a non homo way of course, anyway.
welcome, hi, all that ****.
angus young never had any lessons, he came out all right.
but, lessons are a plus. sometimes you can learn twice what you would learn with lessons than without them.

Ok, he's heard enough negative talk! I'm sure he gets the point by now. We don't want to run anybody off just because they're upset that they can't get any lessons.

This is a forum open to all ages. It's not like everybody that joins this forum is of age, or able to work. Most places you must be at least 16 before you can get a job (on paper that is). Until then, you're pretty limited to the way's you can earn money. I don't know how old the guy is, but going from his post, I'm guessing he's not quite that old yet. So, lets all just lighten up a bit.. Ok?

Hey, I don't agree with it either (see my previous posts), but like I said. We don't need to discourage a new guitarist with all this negativity. Sorry if I seemed like I was singling you out. I was just trying to make a point about the age thing. No harm intended ;)

It all started for me with a movie that came out when I was a kid called Killer Klowns from Outer Space (http://www.imdb.com/title/tt0095444/). They'd put you in a cotton candy cocoon, and suck out you juices with a crazy straw, or make shadow puppets that could eat you! Terrifying stuff.

The one that sent me over the top; however, was made-for-tv adaptation of Stephen King's It. (http://www.imdb.com/title/tt0099864/) Tim Curry played Pennywise the clown and I had nightmares for the longest time. Quality flicks :D

I'm thankful to have made it through my teens and early 20's without a stint in the fast food industry. I still had some crappy jobs along the way though.

Food jobs suck. If not alone for the smell that lingers to your body afterwards then for the endless customers that just can't seem to make up their mind when they show up knowing that the McDonald's menu isn't any more elaborate than the last time they showed up.

safeway isn't exactly fast food... but it seems just as annoying, if not more, because I have to do heavy lifting... we have some big ass pumpkins, and this lady and this little kid wanted one... and the lady asked her kid which one he wanted, and he of course picked the biggest one... damn... that thing was at least 150 pounds!!! it took everything I had to lift it, and I was sore for the next two days!!! but, the lady was hella nice though, and she wanted to tip me... but safeway doesn't let me accept tips... even though, I think for something like that, I kinda deserved an extra $5 or $10!!! don't you?

I worked at an IGA (grocery store) in high school and we weren't supposed to take tips, but I always did.

I wish people tipped me... damn office job. Oh well, I get free notebooks and memo pads all the time which I can use to store my various thoughts (however demented they may or may not be). That's got to count for something, right?
