I think Metallica is a very good band,actually my favourite and Kirk Hammett is the best guitarist ever.What do you think?Your opinion?

ya I think hes the best guitar player too, I mean, Satriani and Vai basicly all you need to elarn is play it and people willr egonize it, But with Kirk you need his fingers to sound like him, but most of his stuff is penatonic scales n stuff but the solos that really kick ass are the solos that you never hear cuz ppl think there "dumb songs" listen to the solo in "fade to black" "The Outlaw Torn" or "Eye of the Beholder" those are some really cool solos that I think is some of his best work, especially outlaw torn and fade 2 black, sounds actually kinda like a dolphin with the slide he uses

Also, I think that though Lars is a good drummer, he's no where near up to the snuff of people like Tim Alexander, Vinnie Paul, The guy from Dream Theater, Bill Ward, or many many jazz drummers. I just don't hear him propelling the band as he should be. Then again though, he's a much better drummer than I'll ever be.

Metallica... i really wish i could say i like them, but, since 96 my respect has steadily dropped till where it is now which is down there with all the other sell-out bands that care more about the almighty dollar than their fans.

One was a good song and the video was a conceptual masterpiece but so what, that was like 15 years ago, they still suck nowadays, let's see em try to remedy that, and then there's that whole thing with Napster.

Kirk is good at what he does, that's it, he's not an amazing player in my oppinion. I think he is the reason that I don't like wah's anymore, the bastard. lol
As for Metallica, they lost my interest when they released Load. I still like their older stuff though.

Actually, I would like to be a decent drummer. I'm a pretty good bassist, tolerable guitarist, it would be nice to round out the mix a little more and play some solid drums. But oh no, mother nature/ genetics were not so kind.

As for other issues brought up in this thread:
-Don't confuse your favorite with "the best." In reality, their really can't be a best. Someone's always better at something.
-Napster is responsible for the mess it's in, not Metallica. Don't make them into a scapegoat.

I don't think there really is a "Best ever" for anything.
My personal all time favorite guitarist is Alex Lifeson (you can see my comments in another thread), but I don't consider him to be the best.
I am not knocking Kirk, I like his style. I like Load (I really like King Nothing), but after that, I think they went to ****.

As for Napster, I don't think its thier fault totally.
I don't think its Metallicas fault totally either.
But Lars being so outspoken and out front about it all, kinda made them look bad.
You can't really blame someone for the tools they make
if those tools are being used improperly/illegally by others. You can use a gun for hunting for food, or you can use it to shoot your boss.

A gun isn't made specifically to shoot your boss, Napster is made specifically to trade mp3's- legal or not... We all know that the majority of material that could be traded on Napster is copyrighted. Now, the big issue damning Napster is that they were offered a licensing deal by all of the major record labels, and they turned it down. Napser was the only such service to do so. Then some artists filed a suit, and after that Lars joined it. So yes, Metallica looks bad, but we all know looks aren't everything. I personally have no beef with Napster except that it takes the choice out of the artists hands. You can go to my band's web page right now and download 2 mp3's- one third of our demo for free. I think that should be up to myself, my drummer and my guitarist, not some kid with our cd and an mp3 encoder. Napster goes a long way to taking that decision away from my band.

My real beef with this issue is some of the record companies
paranoia with mp3's. They are trying to fight it instead of embracing it (some do seem to be trying somewhat).

I know how some of them feel. Writing shareware provides me with part of my income. But fighting the pirates is a losing battle and most methods to fight it only hurt valid users/people.

No way is Kirk Hammett the best guitarist ever. And Metallica definately arent the best band ever. Ive listened to a good few Metallica songs and I hear no feeling or emotion in them. Hes like a robot. These days metllica are just writing songs for the money(I Disappear - terrible song). Fade To Black has a good intro and is ruined by the singing. I really dont see the fuss over Enter Sandman and teh less I say about Nothing Else Matters the better. That song just wnats to be Stairway To Heaven. On the other hand I like One, which is something.

I don't really care that much if kirk hammet can play something that's NOT a solo, i don't like his solo's, and thus would probably not like anything else he'd do.

Anyone whith any sense at all knows that instruments don't make the player. Neither do FX, amps, extra strings, fewer strings, or picks blessed by the Pope. If any of you think otherwise, I know people that will burn you into the ground with any instrument you hand them.

Of all the Metallica fans I've ever come across, you have to be the least eloquent, highly ignorant, and generally "poonish" one I've ever seen. I certianly have nothing against Metallica, I have respect for their work and the balls they have to say what they think despite popular opinion, but how the hell do you think you're doing them any credit? For one thing most of your arguments are based entirely on... NOTHING. All you can really say is "I LIKE METALLICA, SO THEY HAVE TO BE THE BEST." You can't tell us why or how you came to this conclusion, much less articulate anything resembling a knowledge of the instrument or independant thought. Second, when you decide to move on to pure insult, you use the weakest, most tired ramblings I've heard since 3rd grade. "JEW!!!!"? I mean, that's only insulting if your first Antsemetic, and second haven't heard it twenty thousand times. When Godsmack took the rythm part of "Angry Chair" and crossed it with a fill from "Over Now" and called it "VooDoo;" that was more creative than anything I've seen come off of your keyboard.. And for another thing, if you want to hear some real guitar playing applied to metal, check out something like Possessed, or Buckethead, but I think he's too original for you to comprehend (since Metallica is clearly a fassion statement to you, not music).
Again, I say grow up, we'll all be alot happier that way.

Without trying to start another fight, i think someone said it best when they said that Metallica doesn't play w/soul. In their slower, emo-type songs, there isn't that much emotion, compare it to say Tool or Failure, it isn't as charged. In their faster, metal songs, they don't have anywhere near as much force as Static X or Ozzy, and on both accounts when compared to the Deftones or the earlier Failure stuff they get blown away. It's like, why would you, for instance, buy a Lincoln for $45,000 when you can get a Ford Crown Vic police interceptor for $30,000 that has all the same stuff inside plus a better engine? That's why I don't listen to Metallica and don't like what they do, i know of a whole load of other bands that do the same thing and more, and do it better.

as for the squire guitars...my dad has played a squire telecaster for the better part of 12 years...he sounds pretty good to me...of course he is playing a fender twin reverb that he has had for twenty someodd years...he squeezes some pretty decent gatton tones out of that tele...but he leaves his 57 strat for special occassions...i have a charvel and i just recently purchased an ibanez...are my guitars better than his...are his better than mine...we really don't care ...they have their own unique tones that we would prefer not to compare...they work for him...mine work for me...

I think Kirk Hammett is a great guitarist not my favourite but he's good, I like Lars's drumming, Cliff was a good bass player and so is that new guy, but James Hetfeild is a joke he has one of the top 5 worst voices in music history right up their with Brian Johnston of AC/DC and David Lee Roth of Van Halen.

To answer the original question, no, and no. I used to like Metallica a lot, but my musical tastes have matured since then.
Now I primarily listen to Iced Earth, Nevermore, Testament, Megadeth, Symphony X, Tourniquet, Deliverance, and Flotsam & Jetsam. I'm going to try some Blind Guardian stuff next.

Every board has it's "Metallisheep", just ignore them. They'll get over their obsession eventually.

With the whole controversy over Napster, a lot of people have felt the need to boycott Metallica, well then thats their loss.

Of course I have mixed feelings as to what wen't down, and how the whole situation could have been solved on more rational terms, but a lot of people refuse to look at the whole situation through their view. They felt the need to stick to their beliefs for something that they felt was wrong (something that actually was wrong.) They worked hard to get in the position they are in today, and everyone should realize that for every hard working musician, there are no free bees, and to fully underatsnd what its like to be in metallica's shoes, you have to be willing to live their overall experience, including the tiresome nights on the road. This matter wasn't entirely bout money, it was more about the principle..

As for their music, I like what they have done with Load, and Reload, these are two very excellent records, and they are definitely worth taking along on those long car rides. But still, I prefer their earlier stuff, I really love their compositional rock songs, but you can;t expect the past to repeat itself, and yoiu can;t expect these hguys to travel down the same road forever. You have to really keep a level head, and an open mind to appreciate Metallica. I don't necessarily agree with all of the changes they have made 100 percent, but I have accepted them, and I still enjoy the music that they are making. I'm interested in hearing what their next release with be like...


I owe a lot to these guys, especially for increasing my enthusiasm when I first started on guitar, many moons ago...

I think that their next album will be much heavier than the last 2. It'll probably sound like their newer songs, like "-Human" or "I Dissapear". And I think those songs are pretty damn good.
