View Full Version : Injury Alert! Why we should all warm up and stretch...

Hey guys, just a warning for you all.

We all know how we should warm up and stretch and massage our hands wrists forearms etc before we play, but how many of us do? Or how many give it a token effort?

I've recently bought a new guitar, ibanez pgm 301 (signed by sir pablo himself no less), and in the ensuing "new guitar honeymoon period" overdid the practice a little, and now I've got what's called a gallion on the inside knuckle on the middle finger of my fretboard hand!
It's like a little lump about half the size of a pea, under the skin where the tendons are.
It hurts, and it means i can't play anymore until it's gone. The doc's say it's not serious, should be gone in a few days, just something that can happen to our hand joints if we over work them. I'm no Doctor, i can't honestly say that it wouldn't have happened if I had stretched and warmed up properly, but i think it would definitely reduce the chances.

This thing scared the **** out of me. I know it's not serious but it is worrying. Dont let it happen to you. I stretched before i got into it, but looking back, i could have taken more time to do so, so everybody, before u play, DO YOUR STRETCHES!

Tsk tsk... sorry about your luck dude. Here's to a healthy recovery. At least it's safe to say there's been a lesson learned from this.

Just because I feel like contributing my routine, I don't stretch every single time I play guitar, but I do stretch on a reasonable basis.

I've never even thought about stretching before playing. What stretch's do you do before you play.

Hope you get to play again soon. Did it hurt while you were playing?

Hey dude,

Nice guitar you got there..definatley one to boast about too!
Anyways, didn't realise quite how important it seems to be to warm up. But then..I guess I don't know enough to play much! But I will do as i've been told since u have told us about you gallion!

Thanks for the advice!
