I've been playing guitar for 2 years now and have been wanting to learn Lead for quite some time now, and was wondering if someone would like to tell me a few basic things I need to learn to get this accomplished.

If you want to learn how to play lead you must learn some things, first of all you must learn to be patient.
You must learn all the modes in every key, and you also have to learn arpeggios and theory so that you know what to play, go to guitarnoise.com or wholenote.com and you will find many things, it will take several months even years to learn these things...

BluesShredder's right. I just started taking lessons from last week and the first thing he taught me were variations of modes and arpeggios, and also some basic theories regarding the progressions. If you're serious about not just playing the lead but also gaining insight about the whole song, I strongly suggest you to take lessons. They not only help you sound better but they teach you things that you can build on and be creative with so you can develop your own style:cool:

Here's a easy and direct way to acomplish your goal. First get a firm understanding of the five positions of the pentatonic scale, all that other stuff can be a bit confusing unless your comfortable with these. Know where the roots of your positions are and how to move them to major. Gather a good collection of licks to draw from and understand what makes them work within it's position. You'll need that as a base to fully understand what your doing. After your kickin' some butt then get into your modes and such and you'll have a real grasp on things with little confusion. Jam your positions over some clapton blues to start then maybe some zep or whatever your into. good luck...

Over the next couple of days I will be submitting another series of lessons in the tricks department geared for players starting up playing lead, it will be called, "runaway licks: basics." You might want to check 'em out. Give me a day or two to get it all in there. It should help you build a foundation.
