when you use your fretting hand to play a note without picking it.

Play the 5th fret of the D string with your index finger on it. Now slam your ring finger onto the 7th fret. That's a hammeron.

i just started playing the guitar like 8 mths ago..and now i'm tryin to not refer to tabs or songsheets to learn a particular song..
AND I'M INTO METAL..IRON MAIDEN AND STUFF.CAN ANYONE HELP ME WITH THIS?!!i wanna start playin by ear.anyone have any tips?how abt u shredda?

get familiar with key signatures first, then you will have some idea what chords will most likely be in a song

Iron Maiden will most likely have a lot of stuff in Eminor

also don't let yourself use an electric tuner, find a song that has open notes in it like Black Sabbath 'war pigs' (it has open e in it a lot) or Led Zeppelin 'the song remains the same' (the intro has open d played over and over) and tune your guitar using that song

You're thinking of Metallica. Iron Maiden has songs in a wide variety of keys, including F# minor, Amajor, Gminor, A Double harmonic, etc.
