Yeah my vote goes to petrucci too. He's insane. I always thouht Eddie Van Halen was a little sloppy personally. Just what i think. He's a fine player in his own right however.

Definitely Petrucci.
Though of the two, I'd much rather listen to Van Halen.

Yeah, Petrucci. But Van Halen was, I believe, one of Petrucci's favorite guitarists. I KNOW he was one of Paul Gilberts.

John, of course.
Eddy was 15 years before John.
Every generation, guitarists get bette in technique.
Hendrix<Paige<Ace<Halen<Malmsteen< and now Micheal Romeo, John Petrucci, Rusty Cooley...ect

John Petrucci... i have their dvd concert at the budokan.. he rocks!
My opinion:
Petrucci is technically better but Eddie puts more feeling into his playing.

Petrucci. Malmsteen can't do half the techniques Petrucci can.
Petrucci is definatley better technically. I think Eddie is a better musician overall, though. I'd rather listen to Van Halen than Dream Theatre.
And I would still say Petrucci over Malmsteen.

John man,
not many people out do John.
Almost every neo-classical guitar player now can blow Malmsteen back to sweden

I find that after 20 minutes, i've heard everything Malmsteen has to offer...
"oh here comes another scale"
I find Petrucci's playing alot more interesting, and technical.
Disclaimer: don't blow me up because of my opinion.

Yeah, but let's keep in mind that he blows us all clear out of the water as far as speed goes. Yngwie's music tends to get on my nerves after a while (a very short while), but I think we should respect his dedication to improving his speed. It's taken a lot of discipline and we tend to ignore that in favor of bashing his musicianship.

I'm no fan of Yngwie, but I saw him live in Dublin a few months ago and he is a serious player. I read a lot of posts saying that his technique is sloppy and that he is boring. Well, the technique was amazing at the gig. Very impressive, you could hear each indiviually picked note and the arpeggio sequences were flawless. However, by the end of the gig the solos did start sounding the same. There were a few high points and then a lot of the same thing, but he still put on a grea show.
I vote Petrucci as the better player though. He can play any style and always tries to play something "new". His technique is perfect and if you doubt his ability beyond Dream Theatre, check out Liquid Tension Experiment - excellent instrumental project with a lot of improv.

I'm not denying that at all; he is a very skilled player and he has achieved alot of success.

Sorry, didn't mean to sound so accusatory...it was very late at night/early in the morning. I didn't mean to sound like I was pointing fingers or anything, I'm as guilty of bashing Yngwie as the next guy.

PETRUCCI. Anyone who says he doesn't play with feeling hasn't listened to his solo on "another world" from a change of seasons. However as a huge fan i will admit his playing seems a little technical at times. I appreciate eddie more as a roff writer than a soloist.
