Hey everyone,
This is mt first post, I am a new member. I have been playing for jeesh 7 years or so, but I have never advanced past basic chords and a little note playing. I really want to learn how to play now. What do you suggest I start with?
Any advice is welcome ty

I KNOW HOW YOU FEEL, I WAS THE SAME WAY.THE MOST I CAN TELL YOU IS TO GET A LITTLE CREATIVE WITH WHAT YOU ALREADY KNOW; THROW IN A COUPLE STRING BENDS, EFFECTS, AND MAYBE SOME ALTERNATE TUNNIGS. YOU DON'T HAVE TO KNOW EVERY THING ABOUT GUITAR PLAYING TO BE A GREAT GUITARIST.

Geez dude, turn off the caps.

Robyn, my suggestion would be to learn as many songs as you can. Start off with simple ones. I don't know which style of music you like, but some simple songs to learn would be Green Day's "Time of Your Life" or Pink Floyd's "Wish you Were Here".

Learning songs will help you learn new techniques while improving your knowledge of the instrument. You'll be jamming in no time.

One of the things I always did was invent some little riff or chord progression I couldn't play, that was just a bit past my ability, then practice it until I could do it with ease. That has always helped me out a lot.

It happens to a lot of guitarists now and then. If you find yourself in a rut and are struggling, go to a good tab or better still buy a book with cd, make sure it is a tune or sing that you really love and can feel the beat to it. Then practice it, and funny enough this works. I have posted a note relating to taking some private tuition and a reply from "Lordathastrings" (might be spelt wrong sorry)answered with self taught by someone who knows jack..... Very wiseley put and in my case also very true as I am self taught, and over the years have hit several walls in my advancment of my beloved guitar and playing.

Hope this is of use to you. Riff and enjoy

Thanks Max,
Very good suggestion... The hunt will be on for a great teacher as soon as I have money to pay for them lol...which could be awhile :-p. I do agree with you though I have taken a basic class at my college, but it was just that..basic, stuff that I already knew..Sure I learned some stuff but I think I could benefit from private lessons. But until I have money I need to make do with me.:-) Ty for your advice and wtg on your playing,
Robyn

when i first started to paly guitar and i took lessons at my 2ND TIME at guitar lessons ive been palying guitar for like, what, a week? maybe 2? but anyway at my second week hes like "O.K. Lets learn "The kids arnt allright by Offspring" adn he was such a geek he had the short hair with the tucked in shirt and I couldnt ven do a chord not mentioning not beable to play that fast friggin song, well, 2 years later i can play like ALMOST everything, excluding some vai satriani and so-on, but now I got the cooloest teacher with the long hair n stuff, the point is, That if you do get lessons, and you dont like the guy thats teaching you..DITCH HIM find some1 u really like or guitar lessons wont be fun, it'll be a chore

I've been playing now for more years than I care to remember (not that I've got that much better!), but it seems to me that once you master something you get kind of stale, like you've reached a plateau. Then something else catches your interest, and you start to learn that, and you climb to the next plateau. If all else fails, try a different style of music, like acoustic guitar or jazz or something - even if you don't like it, you'll learn something from it that you can incorporate into your own playing. Good luck!

I have been playing the guitar for about 2 years and besides taking lessons the thing that has helped me the most is taking a song that I like and then finding the cords and tabs off the internet and going over it over and over until it sounds the way I want it to. At first when I start a song it will sound like crap but after a while I will get the hang of it.

i really think that nothing can change the real teacher..
i learn things by myself, like theory and stuff, but without my teacher i probably wouldnt be able to really progress
