Along time ago it just didnt matter to me what cable I used, it was so loud and heavy I probably wouldn't of noticed a difference, but now.......
I just got a Fender VIbrolux and have found the wonderful world of tone, so now that I am done drooling on myself, I need to purchase some decent cables, cant see spending 50.00 for a 18 footer but......
Any opinions would really be appreciated.
Thank you

The shorter the cable the better.
However, unless you're going to get the 'really' good stuff, you probably won't notice much of a difference.
ie,
Pro Oval Guitar Cable
Solo crystal copper is used to create the smoothest possible sound. The ultimate guitar cable with double shielding, conductive dielectric layer to eliminate charge build up, patent hollow oval design to make sure all the music from the guitar reaches the amp, low loss TEFLON dielectric for fast transients and acustom 1/4" mono plug for the perfect connection.
Length
(feet) Connector Type
Mono Plugs
10ft $ 299.00
15ft $ 448.50
20ft $ 598.00
Add $29.90 per additional ft.

Don't forget to add $49.99 for the fairy dust. :p

I've just ordered a George L's 15 foot cable for about $30. this brand of cable was rated #1 by guitar player (or some guitar magazine like that) so they can't be all bad... I'll let you know how it is after it gets here

I say PROCO cables last long and it's very reliable, check 'em out. Score the Proco lifelines one. I've been using the same 10 footer cable for about 4 years now, and it has served my well. Pretty good value and cheaper than monster cables which i think is tooo overpriced. Good luck!
Hope i helped!

I have two George L's 20 footers and I love them. Absolutely the best cables I've ever played through; I was astounded at the clearity of the signal coming through them and they seem nearly indestructable.
However, I got them for WAY cheaper than you did. It may be worth checking around local guitar stores to see who carries them, because the ends may cost $3-5 a piece, but the cable itself is dirt cheap; my 20 footers were only about $20 each.
Edit: The only downside to them is that if you wander a lot (like I do), they like to tangle up, even so, I've found them well worth the money and the de-tangling.

well, the cables I already have like to tangle alot too, so it won't be anything new to me. I am surprised that to find out that you got a twenty footer for $20... I'm getting one of those 'pre-made' cables off musicians friend... should I have gotten the ones that you can assemble? but they only had the "effects cable kit" thing where you chould do it yourself... oh well, I guess I'll get over it, but, if I decide that I need 2 or 3 more of these cables, then I'll look around at some shops first...

Are the curly cables any better than straight ones does anybody know?

hmm.. haven't used curly cords in years.
I always associated them with the kind of equipment that beginners use.

Well, I have two things working in my favor; for one I bought the cable in New Hampshire (no sales tax) and for another, I've been going to this store for over a decade... so they probably knocked $5 or so off of what I paid. But that's still 5 more feet for $5 less than you paid.
When I bought my cables, they basicly asked me which ends I wanted to use, measured out the amount of cable I wanted off of a spool then assembled it for me right there. The first one I got, they even showed me how to fix it and reassemble it properly.

No, they aren't.
For one thing, as Schmange said, "the shorter, the better" and when you get a curly cable, you're essentially using, say, 15 feet of cable to make an effectively 10 foot cable.
Another thing that happens with them is that coiling up a cable like that causes signal interference within itself.
