oh man, I was recording this song a little while ago... not super quality or anything, but still, I put about 45 minutes to an hour into it... and right as soon as I click the save button, the computer freezes.... and I lost the whole thing... it pisses me off so much, because I was improvising the solo, but I must've redone it like 15 times to get it right sounding... and now it's gone

That sucks. Look at it this way... life is a cookie.

You should come to the chat haha.

One of my math teaches in high school used an interesting expression- "That's the way the cookie bounces."

I, and I'm sure many others here, feel your pain. I had been working on one song for quite a few days and I don't know what happened in the process, I'm guessing the knobs on my amp were turned around or something, but no matter what I did I just couldn't get it to give off the same tone I originally had. And it sounded really abstract and just didn't work. Like a band recorded the first half and then let some other band finish it. So I had to scrap the whole thing and start over just so I would be satisfied.

Been there, done that, bought the t-shirt, then burned the t-shirt, then re-recorded the song after being inspired by the burning t-shirt, but remembered to hit save after every little thing I did, so I wouldn't have to buy another t-shirt, just to end up burning the t-shirt from being so pissed off.

That would have cleared up everything for me.

As from today I can add to this thread.

I just spent over an hour perfecting the rhythm to something I was writing, I then went to delete a snippet of the recording and accidently deleted the whole thing!

My computer did that once also, froze up after doing a lot of work......I had to go buy a new monitor b/c I was so pissed I kicked it off the desk.....oooops. I learned to save my work at least every 10 or 15 minutes, and after everytime I record a track.

with that, you should just be able to click 'undo' under one of the menus though

It deleted the file completly, it didn't even go into the recycle bin or anything.

Usually when I write songs, I end up going back to listen to them the next day, and I'm like, "Who wrote this garbage?"

So if it doesn't get deleted while I'm doing it, it pretty much deletes itself anyway!

I do that all the time

I can't think of a time I've been dissapointed with what I've written. Some things I just think higher of than other stuff, but essentially I like all my work.

Well I like the songs that I write if I'm actually trying to write a good song.
Some songs I write I use them as a sort of therapy, and it ends up being angry, cliche, teenage garbage. But I found that these bad songs help me deal with issues. That.. and a 12 pack.

I DO NOT record ANYTHING to computer first!!!!! I know how my 'puter has lost stuff and most wasn't even important and that really blows, so to do something that valuable and then lose it? I'd be crashing my computer,........LITERALLY!!!!

I have a Boss BR532 digital recorder with 4 tracks and 32 virtual tracks with 128 meg smart card. So I record all I want with the drums that are in the recorder, AND only then will I dump to computer. Right after that I then burn to disc so that none of my hundreds of hours of improv are lost due to the dreaded virus-prone 'machine'!

I hope you get your stuff back and post it. Looking forward to hearing your stuff.

well, it was my poor man's way of recording... I went out and spent maybe $5 on an adaptor to plug into the line in on my computer... I would rather be recording into a several hundred dollar digital recorder... but I just don't have that kind of money... eventually one day, but I'd sooner get a new guitar then a digital recorder... for now I'll just download my free backing tracks off the net and solo over them, or, create my own backing tracks (which really doesn't work too well and I end up with 5 or 6 different guitars all in one song... lol)
