I just got this amp for small venues, its 30 watts and has 11 different models of other amps and effects. Nice amp for 239.00, free shipping from Musicians Friend.
I play Death Metal to Jazzy stuff and everything in between, it works for me.
hope this helps

I think combo would be your best bet like you said. I would look at something with either 2x12 or 2x10. Single speaker combos tend to give less character to the sound but they are cheaper and some of them are just as loud as 2x12's. Marshalls are nice but pricy... The Vox amp that was recommended looks pretty nice but I've never played it. I personally have a Marshall JCM800 2x12 combo... it's a tube amp and I think it's 50 watts maybe it's 60... can't remember. Anyway, it's louder than anyone should ever need. I would recommend taking your axe to a guitar shop and playing on the different amps to get a feel for what you think sounds best... don't be afraid to crank it up. Always test equipment in the same conditions that you will use it. Good luck!

What's your price range?

Depending on your budget.
Get a Fender FM 212R combo. That thing punches a great deal of sound, and you might wanna buy a distortion pedal/overdrive whatever with that. $299 for the fm 212R
If you want a much versatile and much better amp. Get a Roland Cube 60. Packs 60 watts into this little box, and i cannot stress enough of how much inscredible the cube 60 is. GET IT MAN, you won't regret. Go rolandus.com for more info on the cube 60. $345 for that.
So all in all, get the FM 212R for volume, but the effects need work on that. OR. Get the Roland Cube 60, that gives a great deal of on-board effects, and volume for a 60watter.
These are my suggestions. Hope it helped.

I also recommend the fender FM 212R... I was in the same predicament as you, I had a 15 watt practice amp, not loud enough for gigs, and i was on a budget.. someone on here recommended that amp to me, and I went for it... couldn't have been happier, this thing will definately be loud enough for you. the distortion is ok, perhaps a pedal would be better, but, it gets the job done. read my review of this amp in the reviews section of this message board. it's a really good amp for the $300
