Hey everyone, I need your help. I'm looking to buy a nice drum maching and sequencer so that I can work on my solo improvisations over my own chord progressions/melodies. Can anyone give me suggestions about what to buy? What name brands? What model? How much this will cost me, and where to order?
Also, I'm looking to buy a multi-effects pedal like the one Petrucci uses. I'm not very knowledgable about equipment, so I would most definitely appreciate your help with my search. Thanks a lot, keep shreddin'!

Actually I recently purchased an Alesis MMT-8

It's rather simple and pattern based. It's almost 10 years old, but was in good shape and is really useful for ~$110.00 USD. I use it for exactly what you've mentioned, improv/jamming practice. I also have an Alesis SR-16 drum machine, which I've had for many years. It is also easy to program, has decent features and realistic sounds - as opposed to more spacey, ambient techno sounds.

The cool thing about a simple MIDI rig is you can add on components at any time to suit your budget and needs. Maybe I'll come across a used piano module for $50.00 - that might make for a cool sequenced rhythm track.

Most of my MIDI gear isn't high grade by any means, but I get a lot of use from it. If you're just starting out and don't want to dump a lot of $$$, I'd recommend getting a used drum machine. You can get mine (SR-16) for < $150.00 USD and Boss makes several that are slightly more expensive and a bit more complex. You can use start/stop and tempo jacks with a standard 1/4" footswitch - real handy for live jams.

good luck
