should die a slow painfull death http://www.clicksmilies.com/s0105/sauer/angry-smiley-005.gif! In the past week I've had a toolbox full of tools stolen from under my carport, a jigsaw and headge trimmer stolen out of my utility room, and a bucket of change and camcorder stolen from inside my house. On the bright side, they didn't touch any of my guitars or anything..... yet. I swear, if these/this sorry bastard get's stupid and breaks in while I'm at the house, they're going to be in a lot of pain! http://www.clicksmilies.com/s0105/sauer/angry-smiley-015.gif

I used to steal things... when I was, like, 10. I regret every last bit of it. The guilt afterwards that I still to this day carry doesn't let up and if I could go back... well... I wish I thought things through a bit more then rather than just jumping into action. The person who I was then is not someone that I'm particularly fond of. Though I do know what it's like to have things stolen and that in turn showed me what it was like for anyone who previously owned various things that I had taken. A lesson I had been waiting for, if you will. That being said, I'm sorry about your loss.

You know, some other cultures really know how to deal with thieves. Chop off a hand for the first violation and odds are, there won't be a second. Sorry to hear that one of these useless pukes decided to help themselves to your stuff.
If you do happen to catch one, before you call the police, remember, there's a cluster of nerves in the soft part of the arm pit. A nice swift strike with a finger or two will make them scream and wet themselves. THEN call the police.
Nothing like being led into the pen crying with wet pants. It sets a nice tone for their stay... :D

Dude... this is trippy... Earlier today at work I had a big conversation with a couple of coworkers about stealing.. I came home on break and saw this on the forum and I just got a call from a friend of mine saying that his girlfriend's truck was broken into. I'm going into safety hysteria here or something.

well PRS, that sucks man...I hate when things are stolen from me.
Got a new room mate a few weeks ago...he attempts to play guitar(I dont mean to sound like a dick, but how can someone be playing for 7 years and still be so ****?)
the wanker steals my plectrums...and I am very specific about my plectrums...it has to be 1.5mm Dunlops...I had a few, they went missing. I know he had none of them, but noticed he was playing with one...I asked if he had seen mine, he said no, promptly adding that the one he was using at that moment was HIS(liar). when I got home from work the next day, he had that one and another one...both of them chewed(so as to show me that they are his...even tho all his other plectrums aren't chewed...).
Now I have a few 12packs of my 1.5mm plectrums...only one of them is open now,and I count the remaining plectrums eveyday...
I know a plectrum is a petty thing, but I hate sitting down to play. only to find that all my picks are gone...

You're right. It's not a fair trade. Not by a long shot. But then again, taking something that clearly doesn't belong to you isn't fair either. It's always been my thought that if you want something, ask. You would be surprised how many people are actually decent human beings and will gladly give to help someone else out. The minute you cross the line and take something that isn't yours, consideration becomes secondary.
Then we can move along the ol' logic trail and say that you have to look at what is stolen to decide the degree and extent of punishment? Is stealing $5.00 from an elderly person on a fixed income less a crime than bilking some huge conglmerate out of a half a million dollars? It's theft. Plain and simple.
My reasoning for bringing up the removal of a hand for stealing is not along the eye for an eye theory. I think it's a pretty good deterent. I believe that people would be less inclined to steal if they knew if they were caught they would be given a permanent reminder of their crime.
But then again, I may be wrong about this. It is an antiquated way to do things.

I recently stole a lip gloss at bath and body works that cost 10 dollars. I was like **** that ****, and I just dropped into my purse. I kind of feel guilty, but that is just a ridiculous price.

at the hotel i work at, we have about twenty housekeepers. this means that there is roughly five rooms per person. there is absolutely no reason that at 3.00pm half our rooms are not cleaned and inspected. we have people go up after the cleaning to make sure that the electronics all work, the toilet flushes, etc. it's also housekeeping's job to keep a note of which rooms are vacant and which ones aren't.
well lo and behold, 3.00, and there's a guest who flew in from Australia and they want to check in. their room is not ready. so i have to go up and see the state of it to see if it's okay to send them up; it's not, the place hasn't even been touched, there are empties all over and the sheets are messed up; total mess.
i threw the empties out, i dropped the laundry down the chute, and i took the $20 tip the person left for housekeeping. then i went downstairs to the housekeeper's office and ther are seven cleaning ladies sitting there talking about Mexican soap operas instead of doing their job.
at first i kind of felt low about taking the tip; i make $5 more an hour than them, and i also am ten to twenty years younger and still have the chance to go to college since i don't have 9 kids. but when i go down and see that, my sympathy drops.
besides, the $20 went to getting the poor aussie a drink. 15 hour flights suck.

Three days after I moved to Canada somebody stole my bicycle from Yorkdale. Nice introduction to the country.
Then I found out my best friend was breaking into my place while I was at school. I found about 20 of my cassette tapes sitting in the dirt on the floor of his car once & wondered how they'd gotten there.
I had a party once and another so called friend turned around and my brand new set of strings was sticking out of his back pocket. Another friend stole a diamond ring. Another one stole some rare 1967 Chum Charts I'd had since I was a kid.
I put cameras everywhere now and bug my phone... have a little red light that goes on whenever somebody is using a phone in my house. I've got video cameras all around the house recording 24/7 with a battery backup in case the power goes out.
It sucks to be paranoid and spy on people but you can't trust anybody, especially when you've got studio equipment.

Yeah...thieves are just like drummers...only a very small percentage of them are useful! and even then, oinly to a small percentage of non-drummers!
I can't stand it.... my house got broken into while I was sleeping upstairs. I nearly caught the guy, but not quite... had to stop as I'd got the broken glass from the window in my feet - couldn't chase him.
If I had caught him I probably would have killed him, so it's probably for the best I didn't manage it... I also had a guy try to mug me at knifepoint, but he didn't think he was so clever once I had the knife and was threatening to stab him! (I didn't by the way, although I did give him plenty to think about)
I live in hope that all these people get what they deserve... what upsets me really is that the police are so useless they'll never catch anyone, much less prosecute them and get them a sentence bad enough to act as a detterent.
For comedy, in the UK a while ago there was a news story about the police asking for help to find a guy who assaulted somebody in the POLICE STATION CARPARK! I mean.... what's the point?

And yes, the Police are useless. My girlfriend got jumped by a gang of 6 people, she got beaten up. It was completly unprovoked, they tried making some crappy excuse "oh, you called me sister" or some crap like that, just any excuse to kick off at her. She went to the hospital to have her wounds looked at, then to the police station. The police said they would get back to her; they never did.

I moved to my present crib in January of this year, and a little while later some idiot broke in and stole my desktop speakers with a smallish but powerfulish woofer, a worldspace satelite receiver and cash. The idiot didn't think the computer itself was more valuable, so he left it behind.
Sucked big time. But it could have been worse (the PC).
Andrew SA, lose the roomie. I thought a roomie was supposed to be someone known to you and somewhat a friend. I guess in the UK things work differently, but here in Kenya no one is going to live in the same house with a complete stranger just to split the rent and utility bills. A room mate would have to be a pal, a former college or school mate, someone from your homw area, a cousin, that sort of thing. And of course you normally wouldn't expect the above mentioned persons to steal from you so blatantly. Normally.

the police are absolute crap in this country...
i got mugged once when i was 14 walking down to the newsagents with a friend to get some sweets. this group of 4 15/16yr old guys crossed the road and started following us shouting abuse and throwing stones. we ignored them and carried on, but eventually got caught up and threatened till we gave them the money we had on us, which amounted to about £1.50 all together. then when we were trying to run away i had a bottle thrown at the back of my head which handily smashed and sent glass all down the back of my neck.
when we got to a phone and called the police they pretty much flat out refused to do anything... the woman i was talking to told us to go home and try and avoid going there on our own in future!!!!!
due to this (and a number of other incidences where friends and family have been involved) i have absolutly no sympathy for criminals of any kind. and it really pisses me off when i hear about them being given short sentences when they're robbed and beaten someone up because they've supposedly had "a hard life"...
i should stop there.... this might turn into an unstoppable rant!

I've always hated dealing with law enforcement in any way, shape, or form. But I've found the best method is to act exceedingly respectful (to the point of kissing ass), and most cops will let you by with a warning. I've gotten out of 2 speeding tickets that way! http://homepage.ntlworld.com/cmmsdm/smilies/woohoo.gif

Yes, because the few cops you've delt with are a fair basis to judge the thousands upon thousands that you haven't.
Sorry, but that's exactly the sort of thing people use to justify racism, classism and virtually every other evil we can inflict upon our fellow man.
I've been around a fair amount, I know people from all ends of the spectrum and here is the truth of the matter:
There are a lot of well trained, professional, solid cops out there who have an honest desire to help people by doing their job well. And there are also a lot of assholes with a badge; sometimes it's due to incompetance, sometimes is just the end result of dealing with the worst humanity has to offer day in and day out -- it takes a horrible toll on any person.
And frankly, assumptions like the one you just made don't do anybody any justice, ever.
Typically, if you're respectful and honest (which may mean not saying EVERYTHING you're up to, but not lying about it either) with cops, they're a lot easier to deal with than if you're being rude and/or a smartass. And it doesn't much matter if you're being stopped in Sunset, Louisiana by a small, pear shaped man with a Napoleon complex who's looking for any minor excuse to write a ticket or by a Vermont State Trooper who just nailed you, dead to rights for going 20 miles over the speed limit.

out of all the cops i've encountered, there were only a handful who i thought were unprofessional.
the LAPD is, in some areas, as bad as its reputation is. a few days after i got here, i was exiting a parking lot and got to a stop sign. I came to a solid stop as I always do, looked both ways, put on my turn signal (no one else EVER does this in LA) and went to make a right. A cop car flew up from behind me and hung a right as well - on the outside of the turning circle so that he was turning parallel to me into the opposite lane of traffic and then starts screaming at me.
"HEY YOU, YOU CUT ME OFF, I'M A COP, DO YOU KNOW WHAT THAT MEANS?"
"...what???"
"YOU CUT ME OFF AND YOU BLEW THAT STOP SIGN!"
"...no, I came to a complete stop, looked both ways, put on my signals and-"
"I HAVE THE RIGHT OF WAY IN THIS PARKING LOT!!!"
"-I made the turn and you kind of cut me off just a second ago-"
"I HAVE THE RIGHT OF WAY IN THIS PARKING LOT!!!"
and then he slammed on the gas and flew into traffic, cutting across two lanes and causing the cars in those lanes to jam on their brakes and almost crash, and then ran a red light.
or one night, I saw a drug-related shakedown happening and went to flag down a cop car (I used to live in world-famous Rampart Division :( ). The cop car shot straight past me, and there was no way they could have missed me standing on the curb waving at them. They passed by 3 mins later and I went to wave to them again, and they slammed on their brakes, flipped on their sirens, put the spotlight on me and got out with their hands on their guns. I put my hands up and they were like "stay right where you are sir," and came toward me. "Why were you flagging us down?"
"...uh, there was just a mugging or shakedown or something on that street there, the guy is still over there, I was just trying to get your attention..."
the cops looked at eachother and then at me.
"I was just trying to be a good citizen. (i decided to play up the guilt here) sorry, I won't do it again."
they grudingly went over to see if the guy was okay.
not the best way to foster community relations. no wonder everyone in that area loathes the police. if i was a horrible criminal why the hell would i flag them down???
but aside from those the cops have always been professional and nice.

One little scam the cops have going here in is they'll add a 'Mischief' charge to anything else they charge you with. So if somebody is doing anything from drinking in public to shoplifting or driving without a license, they'll also charge them with Mischief. The purpose being that if they drop the original charges , they still have something to convict them with in court.
They know from experience that Mischief is an indefensible charge because you could technically be causing Mischief by doing just about anything.
.. learned that one from a friend who went to work for em.
I also learned that most cops don't give a crap about the law when they aren't actually working. It's just a job. Most of em get power mad, especially when they're first hired. And most of em lose all their friends because nobody wants to be associated with cops. For instance, as soon as my friend (and former band mate) joined the force, I didn't want him coming around anymore. He showed up a couple of times in his cop car and I'd be sitting outside talking to him or he's showing me the computer in his car, and I suddenly notice all the neighbors are out front of their houses because they thought I was being charged with something. Or he shows up just when we've lit something up which shocked the hell out of me the first time it happened.
He didn't care about it, but the one thing you don't wanna see when you're just starting to mellow out with a bunch of friends is a cop in uniform standing outside your door.

Apparantly the government were putting more cops on the beat (this was some time ago), since then, I have only seen 2 cops on the beat.
Whilst on the phone you should have demanded to talk to someone else, as that woman seemed extremely unprofressional.

 I was at a party once, smoking in a little group like you do, comparing notes. Asked one guy 'what do you do?' and guess what? He's a cop! Had to change my trousers, but he carried on smoking with us for hours...
There may be some good police, but in the UK they're too busy doing nothing to be effective. My parents live 25 miles from the nearest manned police station, so that's just great.
Where I live, whatever happens we just have to accept that the cops won't do anything about it...

I don't think Englands 'bobbies' have kept up with the times.
They're still using 20th century policing techniques that rely on most people not knowing anything about the law. Twenty years ago, people automatically assumed that if you did something illegal, there was a huge organization prepared to charge you and put you in jail.
These days, just from watching t.v., everybody knows what the law is and how inadequately prepared the cops are to deal with lawbreakers.
Especially teens.
The schools have changed too. Back when I was in school in Hull, if you just looked at a teacher wrong you'd get your hand slapped with a ruler or your butt paddled. You wouldn't dare do something wrong.
These days, the teachers are so afraid of lawsuits it's no wonder nobody respects authority anymore.

Couldn't agree more. And that's to say nothing about the teachers these days that get assaulted physically and even sexually(!).
It won't be long before everyone is running around nicking things, knowing they'll never get caught - I even considered it myself... 'if you can't beat em join em'. Sadly, I have a conscience... But then I also have a house full of potential offensive weapons, so am more than prepared for a re-match :D

I got a bill from my cable company 7 years ago anouncing that the special package no-one wanted to buy was going to be added to the basic channel package, and the $35 monthly bill was going up by $5 a month to pay for it. I was watching about 2 hours of TV a week.
I got my ISP bill the same day. $53 for 3 months unlimited access. I was online about 3 hours a day.

Television is a grand idea that never really lived up to its' potential. For every Discovery Channel, TLC, PBS or CNN (or my favorite guilty pleasure, Comedy Central), there are fifty other stations ramming pablum like 'Everybody Loves Raymond' and 'Yes, Dear' down our collective throats.
But to say that I would yank TV out of here? Not likely. It's still nice to occasionally catch an old 'King Biscuit Flour Hour' or 'Austin County Limits' floating on a back channel somewhere.
Oh yeah, almost forgot. The History Channel is another good one. A&E used to be top notch too.
Heck, I guess I do like TV... well, some of it anyway.

Uh, If I had my own house, I probably wouldn't even buy a T.V.
Of course, then some Sociologist would come along doing some poverty research and put me down as "neglected" for not having a T.V.

I dont like tv much...but I love it! Its great watching films and all.
Maynard James Keenan says that Tv is the biggest mind altering drug in the world...I kinda agree.
I have a friend who doesnt have a tv, his family just never believed in it! My uncle is then same...his house has no TV! I would get a tv just for DVD's and playstation (never had one of them, now we got one in our house and those things are ****ing amazing!),but not for much more!

I've got a tv just for those reasons. Movies are fun because they're untame and aren't forced into the same polished up style that television shows are. Being the horror movie freak that I am, it's hard to find a good horror flick at all, let alone one that can be accepted on television. And video games... I like games. I've been unleashing all hell with resident evil lately. No particular one. I've been playing zero, remake and 4 mostly though.
