i'm not actually sure if this is a stupid question, but what do all those pedals do? Do you just use them when you play or something? I'n not really sure what effects they make, and therefore which kind to get. Could someone suggest anything?

Check out the http://www.bossus.com/ web site there are some great interactive tools (under the interactive pul down menu) that explain what many of there effect pedals do and how to tweak them.
