Hi, I am new here so please to meet you all
I'm now learning guitar on my own and having trouble doing the F major
http://guitar.about.com/library/graphics/openfmajor.gif
the most trouble I have is to get the bottom 2 strings to sound properly
I've been practicing a lot on this chord now it's frustrating me
please tell me how I should position my fingers..
thanks a lot

I had trouble with this one too at first. I was trying to cover the bottom two with my index finger. I found the easiest way is to just play an F Major Barre chord and not hit the E and A strings.

ya i have to agree I am just learing and F is kicking my butt.
so insted of holding 2 strings with your 1st fingure since it it behind it maybe easier to hold down more strings . do most do it that way?

I dont do it that way exclusively, but that is a way to do it. It also makes for some interresting dynamics if you fret the barre chord, and then alternate playing the full chord and missing out the a and low e string...can vary the sound within a strummed piece.

Just play it as a F barre chord. So much easier and faster IMO.
Just keep on practicing until you kick it's butt!
Try moving the shape a few frets higher up the neck - you won't need as much pressure on the top 2 strings to get the strings sounding right. Once you get it, start shifting back down. Cheating is OK, but I think you should at least aim for doing it 'right' before you decide to do it 'wrong'...
You'll need that strength in your hand eventually.....

just keep on practicing using a barre on first fret. If it is so hard for you to do just work on A major or something like a little bit in the middle of the fretboard...
