Good death metal bands in my opinion are few and far between, but no list would be complete without...

Death - most albums have techinical brilliance apart from the first two

Nocturnus - Thresholds (one of the best technical metal albums ever, way ahead of its time... comes complete with death metal vocals)

Morbid Angel - Alters of Madness
At the Gates- Slaughter of the soul...not sure if u consider that death metal
death- most of their albums

There is no such thing as bad death metal. Some of my personal favorites include:

Cryptopsy - None so Vile (who didn't see this one coming?)
Opeth - Blackwater Park, Still Life
Morbid Angel - Altar of Madness, Domination
Decapitated - Winds of Creation
Gorguts - Considered Dead
Suffocation - Effigy of the Forgotton
Death - mostly everything
Carcass - Symphonies of Sickness, Heartwork
Gorerotted - Only Tools and Corpses
Vomitory - Redemption

I could go on way longer than this, but if you're just making one CD then, well, there you go.

As an old bloke who has never (knowingly) listened to death metal bands, I can see from the band names listed why they are called that!

Actually the origins of death metal are quite different from what it is today. Death was the first band to be remotely close to death metal. What death metal is today is different from Death, but none the less they paved the way. Morbid Angel came along soon after and gave death metal a lot of signature qualities (like the vocal style, deep guitars, things like that) which have since been branched off of. Cannibal Corpse... well... they were at the dawn, but that's about it. I guess for their time they took the violence thing to an extreme. Possessed was the band to coin the term "death metal". Just a tidbit of info for kicks.

I'm learning something new everyday since I started learning the guitar a few weeks ago with intention of concentrating on 60s/70s rock.

Since the 60s and 70s I've mainly listened to classical music all the time yelling at my teenage children to turn off their 'devil' music (my son plays bass in a metal band).

I am currently getting a real liking for Metallica, Pantera and others: perhaps I'll 'graduate' to death metal soon. ;)

My 15yo son is starting to worry about me. :D

Arrrgghh!! Carcass!! I knew something was missing. Carcass would be the bigger start of gore-based metal.

Suffocation,Cannibal Corpse,Death,Immolation,Morbid Angel and Nile are my top 6 death Metal bands,Suffocation and Immolations break downs are legendary,Nile's speed and clarity are unparalled,Cannibal Corpse is among the more brutal true to death metal bands out there without throwing away technique for gore and Death is.......Death,they are pretty amazing, all around fundamentally sound.Cryptopsy may be the most technically proficient death metal band on the planet,Decapitated is also very good as well, especially for being so young,Opeth is a good prog/death metal band, melodically devastating and Morbid Angel just flat out rocks evil, sick riffs maybe the best riffers of the bunch as a whole.Any of these bands should get you just what your looking for,Death Metal as it should be played, each with it's own sense of style but each equally devastating.

I never could get into the death scene. It's just the vocals that turn me off. "Cookie Monster" singing, as I call it just doesn't do it for me. I like the heaviness and speed, but just can't force myself to like the singing style. Just a lil grit and occasional screaming is great, but reaching the lower limits of the human voice until it's no longer distinguishable isn't for me. As I'm fairly ignorant of the genre, are there some that don't sing like this that I could get into?

And you can admit that. The first step to recovery is admitting that you have a problem. Ah, I'm just busting your chops. I noticed the screamo thread's rehashed itself, but I'm choosing to not say anything more since the horse has long since passed.

That is exactly how I feel. I like most genres of metal, but I just can't get into death metal. I can't get myself to take the cookie monster vocals seriously. I still listen to it occasionally though, as most of it has some good guitar work.

One step ahead of you on necrophagist. I dunno about behemoth. I like their older stuff more, not their oldest stuff, but before zos kia cultus (though I have that cd and demigod which sounds pretty much the same). I don't care much for the direction that behemoth's going. I like the music and all, but it's not a favorite... but what do I know, I guess? I'm one of the apparant few that liked Pandemonic Incantations. And of course Satanica is good. Just me though.
