The very idea of G3 seems to go against everything I stand for in music. It's not the music, it's the instrument, aargh I don't like that, they should stay in the coffins that the 90's put them in or go and live in Japan where they are loved. Just kidding, I don't really mean that, it's just that I am so completely unexcited about three guys who dedicate an entire tour to virtuosic one-upmanship.

It's a good thing you put the mandatory "just kidding" in there, or I'd have to bring down a rucus on your head. Lol, just kidding.

Anyway, suffice it to say that I disagree. These three aren't up there for one-upmanship, or to simply try to out do the others. They're up there for the music. The fact that their music is very complicated and demanding is why it's usually mistaken for "virtuoistic one-upmanship".

Unfortunately, most people these days don't want to hear complex, interesting music. They just want to hear a few chords slopped together and some jackass vocals.

I do find Satriani to be a very boring player, and most of his compositions are nonsense shredding to me. But i wouldn't say the same about Vai or Petrucci (huge Dream Theater fan over here).
while I DO embrace complexity, it's essential that it works musically. Steve Vai and John Petrucci usually are both very mature when working with other musicians. I don't think they should be seen the same way as Satch.

Tee he he. Actually, it would probably be a pretty interesting concert to go to. I'm just a bigger fan of Miles Davis style one-note-per-bar solo/melodies. However, is only my preference, I know that G3 are amazing guitarists.

Siren, I don't think it's fair to say that Satriani is nothing but "nonsense shredding". If anything, Satriani is known for his melodies. Just look at Summer Song, the Forgotten Part II, or Surfing with the Alien. While each song does have a good deal of shredding, each one has a solid, catchy melody that it's built around.

Bardsley, I know what you mean about one-note-per-bar solos. I'm a big fan of Gilmour from Pink Floyd. Gilmour was about as slow and melodic of a player as they come, but he never ceased to amaze me.

with exception of two or three tracks, most Satriani's compositions have a very poor rythm section, I personally don't think he gives much freedom to the musicians he works with. His songs get boring really fast because he focuses too much on showing off his skill.
I believe a mature guitarist should give priority to what works musically instead of his/her own ego. There has to be some kind of balance within the elements that make a song, by oversaturating a piece with leads you are only gonna get your listener bored.
