We all love music, that's why we're here and why we play guitar and/or other instruments. The axe is a symbol of freedom, of independence, and idealism.

BUT...

When you first picked up a guitar/started a band and didn't hope that it would further your status with female population, you my friend, are a LYING SACK OF PUPPY POOP!

Nice way to generalize.
Please, don't try forcing your own motives of playing guitar on others. Not everyone is the same.

Yeah, I never even thought of it. It kind of reeks of desperation don't you think? I mean is the suggestion that we all pictured ourselves as some guitar god shredding out insanely fast licks that make chicks swoon all over us or somehting? Hmm, doesn't seem very realistic, does it? Also, it's a pretty sexist comment, I don't know many of my female friends who play guitar who started for that reason. I started guitar because I love music and it looked like fun, and when I realised that heaps of music from jazz to rock was guitar music, I thought I'd give it a go. Now I want to start learning the trumpet again, I've been listening to heaps of Miles. Or the sax, or the double bass, or the piano... I think I will stick with guitar, I love it, I think it is the instrument for me, and when I want to meet women I will spend time talking and getting to know them rather than try some lame attempt at "impressing" them with my ability/looks/acrobatic skills/general knowledge.

Playin' guitar is definatly a great way to pick up girls. Actually the way I met my current girlfriend was by offering to give her a free guitar lesson because she wanted to learn. That was about a year ago....

Listen Buddy,

I know heaps of guys who play music and I, as a female, completely disagree with your assumption. Music is about soul and self not about popularity. And if you're playing music to get chicks, then that means you're not playing from the heart and people will notice that.
I feel sorry for you if you need music to get chicks, it obviously means that you have the personality of a chair leg and have absolutely nothing to offer a girl except mindless opinions.
You my friend, are very sad individual.

I remember high school being the schlep in the back of the room no one knew was there. Then my junior year I did the music assembly thing with this bunch of other guys. Lead guitar doing Frigid Pink's "House of the Rising Sun". I'll never forget walking back to my locker that day after 7th hour and the way the girls looked at me.

I only wish I had done more about THAT!! :(

I've really never noticed girls caring one way or the other about my guitar playing ablility. I mean, no more than sayin, I really liked that song, or something like that, the way you care about any people you know being relatively good at something. Maybe I just don't look, but I have no idea why they would, and I certainly don't play to impress girls. In fact, the only thiing I think of when playing guitar is music, I could be interrupted by a supermodel and I would tell her to leave me alone if I was in the middle of a Jazz solo. Possibly my thinking is too far in the other direction...
It's interesting to consider the relationship between love lives and music though. I mean, on one hand you tend to write about someone you're thinking of, and to a certain extent you try to coax little bit of sex out of your guitar, get it sounding right. I don't know, it all just seems so tacky, the idea of trying to impress girls. It is sort of degrading, to girls and the guys who attempt it. I'm going too far here, stopping, now. Long night, no sleep....
