Hm... I'm not 100% positive of what he used on "Surfing With the Alien". But I can make a pretty good guess that he used a tube amp, overdrive, delay, maybe a little chorus at times, and a flanger. Satch has always went back and forth with Flanging the distortion and distorting the flanger... so you'll have to play around with the chain. That's what he normally uses on stage I think. I can't name the exact gear that he uses but I'm sure someone will reply to my post and tell me if I'm wrong... Anyway, that's how I would get his tone. Also, I believe he uses DiMarzio humbuckers. A lot of his tone is made simply by the way that he plays though.... so.... good luck with that one. haha

A lot of his old stuff can be "closely" reproduced using an Ibanez Screamer as the core pedal...

For the actual song, "Surfing with the Alien", he uses a Dunlop wah pedal turned on and rolled back into a certain position to filter the tone.
He uses DiMarzio Fred, and DiMarzio PAF Joe pick-ups.
