I see greats like Vai who don't chew their nails and have their nails all neatly cut. I bite my nails, but not loads, I don't tear away at the skin like I used to, now I just do it when i'm a. bored b. nervous, or c. they need a trim.

So, does chewing your nails affect your ability to play guitar?

... So, does chewing your nails affect your ability to play guitar?Only if you tear the quick. The pain can make you flinch instead of playing smoothly. If it gets infected, you're basically ****ed until it heals.

If I cut the nails on my thumb and pointer finger too short on my pick hand, things don't work out quite like they should. My skin seems to grab the strings instead of sliding off my nails like normal. I guess because I play pretty choked up on the pick.

same here, I think its easier choking up on the pick.

Next time you go to bite your fingernails, think about the last thing you touched and the last place you scratched.

Also think about the fact that those taste like a delicious bowl of spicy chili.

Weird, I thought I was the only one who thought stuff like that (you know, laying in bed wondering how many of those ugly dudes are in your pillow and such.) Speaking of which... did you guys see that report on how not making your bed is actually better than making your bed when it comes to those ugly bugs? Yeah, they say that the buggars dry up and die if you leave your sheets pulled back, but if you make your bed they stay alive or something like that... strange... because I have also heard that their carcusses are just as bad for allergies as the alive version.

Ever notice how heavy a pillow gets after a couple of years?
Apparently it's cause of all the dead mites, skin cells and mite droppings.

Ok, Ok... why doesn't someone just start a "Gross Stuff" thread so that it doesn't inflitrate the rest of the forum?! Innocently scrolling along in a thread about biting nails and "AHH!" some poor person sees a giant bug on the screen and before they know it, they've collapsed and broke Lord knows what and GT and it's members are at fault!

I'm just kidding. Nobody start a gross stuff thread. Do not take me seriously.
The Taco Bell thread was a result of a post much like this and at least it's about edible stuff...

I never tear the quick (that's the word I was looking for earlier), I used to from the ages of 9 till 13, but then I stopped doing that, it was painful and sore.

And the bed mite thing is very interesting, something I can tell my mum the next time she moans at me for never making my bed! :p

i bite my nails a bit... it's been a lifelong thing.

think of what you get in you every time you breathe in or take a bite of something. not pleasant, is it?

big deal. if you've been doing it every day of your life... does it matter that much?

Nah, it's just kind of weird to think about it.

Try this... put the palm of your hand between your butt cheeks and then wipe it on your face. Now imagine all those little bugs crawling all over your mouth.
Now go have a sandwich and kiss your girlfriend. http://s93744050.onlinehome.us/smiley/eyebrow.gif

GROSSSSSsss.........
i remember wen i was in 6th grade i saw a girl sneeze in her hands, and then she had a disgusted look on her face and wiped her hands on the counter by the sink, then the next minute i saw another kid put his hands there....he was a nail biter....yumm!!!
i bite my nails too, but not very short, just wen i'm scared...i use to do it really bad wen i was younger, but now i just paint them w/ nail polish and then i didn't want to chip the paint so i wouldn't bite them, so try paintin ur nails, try a color that will bring out ur eyes....yes
