might be a silly question, but is a G6 and Gadd6 chord the same thing? i looking at a few tabs online and they say that both have the same fingering. what's the theory behind naming these chords? thanks.

Not sure about the Gadd6.
As regards the G6, in terms of scale degrees the chord is made up like so: I, III, V, VI. (1, 3, 5, 6). So the specific notes used to make the chord of G6 would be G, B, D, & E. (Correct me if i'm wrong.)
In heinsight the Gadd6 might be the same chord as a G6.
Infact it probably is the same chord. Unless...?

I think add chords have something to do with alternate tunings. I think the notes in a G6 and Gadd6 are the same....but not 100% on this one.

Well, in the chord of G6, you're adding a 6 to the 1, 3 & 5, so techically it's just the same concept as what would be an Gadd6.

Technically you would think so wouldn't you?
I have this guitar book, and in a section for chords, it has the "add" chords, or at least a few of them, in the alternat tuning section. I don't know if the author was smoking something when he wrote the book, but I do know that if it was that good....I may be needing some of it.
If a G6 and Gadd6 are the exact same chord...
I sure hope the crazyness of the english language hasn't some how found a way to infultrate the music world.

It's a mystery! Unless... *drum roll*...

So a 9th chord is made up of the 1 3 5 7 and 9th notes, while an add9th is 1 3 5 9, with out the 7th?
