Stevie Ray Vaughan -yeah he's simple but he rocks!
Slash - he can transmit his emotions to his guitar better than anyone.
Yngwie Malmsteen -most of his licks maybe monotonous but the way he excutes them is outstanding.
Paul Gilbert -fast and furious
Michael Angelo Batio -just when we thought Yngwie is fast

Dudes, not one of you mentioned John Mclaughlin. He is the super being of guitar poweress. He's basically John Coltrane on guitar. He's able to pave his own way, never look back, and he can sit down with almost any other living virtuouso and school them.
When you die and you're at the gates of heaven. John;s going to be there judging whether you've been a good guitarist or a bad guitarist ;)
You have to check him out for sure. From his work with Miles Davis, Mahavishnu Orchestra, to the present.
Here's some video's. Check out "The Translators" Aspan, "Duets" Chiquito with Paco especially, "Mahavishnu Orchestra", and "Various" My Foolish Heart especially. He plays in many different situations/genres, seemlessly.
Here you go :) (http://www.angelfire.com/jazz/jm3/movies.html)

not that at all, think what you want about any guitarist...evryone has an opinion, but that sort of opinion is a crap opinion. hehe, no no, I just dont think that anyone could honestly say either of those guitarists suck as they are clearly better than the vast majority of guitarists...I was serious, it really was ignorance

Did you just put Kurt Cobain on your top five greatest guitarist list?? hmmm? I love his music, and I'm a Nirvana fan... but isn't he known for how bad he played guitar? Anyway, I was just saying that was an interesting choice. But don't get me wrong I'm not trying to take your opinion away, like I said, I love Nirvana and I love Cobains music.

They probably really like Nirvana. Kurt Cobain didn't have the greatest of techniques, but he wrote good songs.

I agree with both of you. I wasn't trying to be an a**hole or anything. Like I said in my post I love Nirvana and they were and still are a great band to listen to. Cobain was a big influence on a lot of people. I accredit him as more of a songwriter than a guitar player though. Just like you said... "he wrote good songs". Since I posted in here and haven't given my opinion on my top five I might as well... here they are in no particular order:
1.Jimi Hendrix (most influencial)
2.Joe Satriani (started the virtuoso movement)
3.Slash (brought the blues to hard rock)
4.Mark Tremonti (Most overlooked guitar player in recent years. PS, I hate Creed... the guy can shred)
5.Jimmy Page (How many classic riffs has he come up with?)
Honorable Mention:
Kirk Hammett, Joe Perry, Stevie Ray Vaughan, Eric Clapton, Steve Vai, Jeff Beck, Kieth Richards, Randy Rhoads, Zakk Wylde, Mike Mcready,... the list could go on

Yeah, alot of it depends on how people operationalise the concept of a good guitarist (good enough to make them a favourite guitarist), naturally it varies from person to person. I give credit to Kurt Cobain for the fact that he wrote good songs, and also that he was successful in doing so, not so much for his playing ability.

Actually it says "Favourite Guitarists".... if you really were trying to be technical about it.... and I know. If you didn't read the posts that I left, I explained my opinion about Kurt Cobain as a guitarist. That doesn't mean that someone else can't like his guitar playing... but thanks Mr. Obvious! Two thumbs up man!

Regardless, unless the person who started this thread then went on to ask our "top five greatest guitarists," I really don't see what point you had.

No, no it doesn't at all. I don't really care if someone puts Ashley Simpson as their "favorite guitarist" OR "greatest guitarist" it will still be their opinion. I simply stated MY opinion about Kurt Cobain as a guitar player, or what I have engrained in my mind of what a "great" guitar player should be. He had some really good riffs and he was successful. I, personally, don't accredit him as a guitar player. THAT was my point... to convey MY opinion on a topic that I was posting about. Nothing more, nothing less... I hope I've explained myself a little better. Sorry for taking up room in the board with this. I'm done now...

May I make an assumption,
You have been playing for a month. You have very little knowlege of guitar and therefore only respect fast guitarists that play big name guitar companies.
That would be my guess too...

Well, I just got back, and while i was on vacation, i found a cool little music shop that sells old tapes. And being a fan of the old simpler stuff, i went in and had a look at what they had. I chanced upon a Steve Vai tape. As soon as i saw it i bought it because im trying to expand my tastes. Listening to it today I have decided to add him to my list of Favorite Guitarists. His songs are badass. Specially "The Audience is Watching". :D

I've been looking to add to my playing styles too. Always been wanting to pick up a Steve Vai album, but haven't gotten around to it yet. What is it that makes him so special? Not having heard any of his music, I can only guess.
