strumming technique

Hi all, this is a rather embarrasing post, I have been playing for 6years now, but I've always had one problem:my right hand strumming technique has never been quite up to standard, tho with picking and such it is great, but for some reason my strumming, particularly fast,mechanical-sounding palm muted stuff, sounds muddy and sloppy, any ideas. When I strum softer or slower parts it is fine, but heavier stuff just isnt cutting it...please help me.
