You can go pretty far armed with just a chord book. There's also some good comprehensive books. Just look around at yer guitar/book store for either one. Learning to read tablature is also a must!

Shackleferd is pretty accurate on that one. When it comes down to it, the best way to learn of things you can do with the guitar is to read all you can. If you want to compose read all you can about the music theory, if you want to play well, read about technique. Read about the things that primarily interest you within the guitar and it certainly wouldn't be a bad idea to research reputable guitarists and find the ones that are masters of the techniques you like and basically learn from their expertise. Even if you don't like them, there's a lot of guitarists that we can all still learn from. Of course this doesn't necessarily mean you should completely change your tastes in music. Just that you really don't know what you can learn until you really observe someone else.

You can also find some awesome advice right here on this webpage...
I think you should find atleast one guitarist in your neighbourhood and jam, make him show you some ****, and learn from him. or fork out some cash for professional lessons.

how do i get started?
Get the books, watch the videos, memorise the scales, but don't forget to play with the sound your axe makes.
I've just started on electric guitar, i haven't played a song yet, but I'm still finding out which settings and pickup positions I like, and I haven't even got 1 FX pedal.
Listen to other guitarists and wonder if you can do make that sound. maybe you can't, but maybe you'll find another way to do it.
Try to make the cat's fur stand on end when you're playing,
Basically, Have Fun! :D

By finding this place you've already gotten started. Now just keep looking around here, trying to absorb as much as you can.

That isn't actually advisable. Run a sink full of luke warm water and put your hands in there for a minute or so, doing light hand and wrist stretches, don't over do it.
It would help to build up a warm-up routine, i'm sure you'll be able to find some in the tricks part of the site, if not, then give us all a shout back here.

I have been playing about 4 months and started with books and DVD's, learnt how to read tab quickly but still couldnt figure it out. I have now started lessons and after 3 lessons I have learnt and progressed more than I did in the few months of teaching myself. But maybe it helps having learnt lots of open chords before lessons.

There some places where you can meet people who play music. but of course you have to figure out what kind of music you want to play. Then lisen to it all the time the more you do it the easier it will be for you pick it up. To top it all off you should practice all the time until you fingers are burning and then some more. Dont be shy if you have friends around you play, and get their inputs that can help on bettering yourself. for example Slash used to lisent to the music that influenced him the most. i mean all the time even had it cracked up when he went to sleep. pissed the locals off but look at him now. anyways, "ROCK ON!!"

That's the best. I do that on an occasion myself. Nothin beats waking up to brutal blast beats and shrieks of agony. Of course I've got variety in there, but listening to music as you fall asleep is great.
