finger position question

i am brand new and i have yet to find an answer to this question:

when they talk in the instructions about finger placement on frets...do you put your finger ON the raised fret, slightly behind it, or in the center..etc....thanks for the help!

It depends on the style you are playing.

Just behind the fret seems the favorite for metal / shredding.

I play more blues and like the middle of the fret as I find it makes bending and adding vibrato easier.

Thanks for that quick response Right now i am just starting out on an accoustic....so mostly i am interested in the finger position i should use as an absoloute beginner.....can you direct an answer to that? thanks

also...the finger position behind the raised fret acts then like the tuning post....holding the string taut and then the raised fret acts as a "temporary" nut........is this a correct analogy?

It generally takes less pressure to fret the note the closer you are to the fret, but the difference isn't huge, so just go with what's combfortable. I guess where this is most important is barre chords; it will be noticeably easier with your finger closer to the fret.

And yer analogy is correct. One thing I'll mention though is using too much pressure on the string will cause it to go sharp, like pushing down on an open string behind the nut (and of course too little and it buzzes).
