I think there's 2 crucial things you must do once you get your callouses and a basic knowledge.

1. Learn to read tablature - from reading lessons on sites like this or learning your favorite songs, it's invaluable.

2. Practice with a drum machine or simple metronome - it not only improves technique but creative paths open up easier with even a simple beat.
