Strap that badboy on and stand in front of the mirror practicing your guitar poses, stances, gestures, faces, and blindly running up the fretboard, perhaps while playing a favorite cd. That's the 1st thing I did anyway, but maybe that's just me (I doubt it though!) I didn't know much else to do with it.
But for some real starting advice, I'd say learn the "cowboy" chords (open position chords within the 1st 3 frets), some scales (major and minor pentatonic at least), and learn how to read tablature if you don't know. This site is a good start for a few beginner lessons, from chords to scales.

You could start by searching this site. There is a lot of good information on a wide range of topics. Try going to the beginner section.

Like I said, open position chords within the 1st 3 frets. In other words, chords that have open strings ringing in them with fretted notes. Nicknamed as such, cuz they're the easy ones that casual pickers (like Cowboys) strum.

"Cowboy chords," if I understand what he's saying correctly, are:
These chords are, in order, A - C - D - E - G
e |--0----0----2-----0-----3----|
b |--2----1----3-----0-----0----|
g |--2----0----2-----1-----0----|
d |--2----2----0-----2-----0----|
a |--0----3----------2-----2----|
e |------------------0-----3----|
Try songs by Creedance Clearwater Revival... most of them only use 3 or 4 of these "cowboy chords."

Yep. Minor chords could count too, there's not a strict definition.

But major chords sound so much happier. :D
