View Full Version : What guitars do you people play??

I'd be intersted to hear what kind of instruments you have. I've just spent what my wife thinks is a disproportionate amount of money on a Taylor 514ce. Money can't buy the kind of pleasure I get from picking on this lovely piece of wood. The tones and feel of the fretboard is inspiring. It did cost me an arm and a leg but there you go - I had to have it.

i play bass and guitar so i have my proper old hand built Warwick Streamer(not the shonky rubbish they churn out these days) which i bought 11years ago.
guitar wise i have a Epiphone zakk wylde les paul, and about a month ago i bought myself a Gibson Les Paul Custom in alpine white. i felt a bit guilty as i didnt really need it, but its so much better than my epiphone.
i like to tell myself its an investment, thankfully i have no wife to convince.

I'm a classic type guy. I have a Squier P-bass, Squier Strat, Fender Strat, Gibson SG, Alvarez Acoustic and BC Rich Warlock. Of those instruments the ones I primarily play would be my Fender, Gibson and Alvarez. I grew up with Fenders and Gibsons, it's more like a heritage. I plan on getting more of each, but I'm gonna invest in some of Carvin's material first. Big fan of Carvin.
Currently I have 1 squire strat 1 fender american deluxe fat strat 1noname homebuilt strat 1 takamine electro-acoustic ... I've had a motherload of them during the years, but so far my favorites are:
Fender * Ibanez * Takamine
I would love to try the Andy Timmons Ibanez signature ...
... I had a Ibanez rg550bk with maple neck ..and I curse the day I sold it!!
gonna get one of those again ..(I sold it because I got fed up with the floyd rose .. I like the regular tremolo ... I use it firmly so I have no need for a locking tremolo) ... the tremolo mounted on my american fender is my favorite ..
okie dokie ..
have a good one

It's not that many, but here's all the guitars I've ever had in 15 years or so of playing.
First guitar was hand-me-down Antares 6 string acoustic. Have never heard of this brand, and never seen another one, but for free it plays great...I still have it.
Then I saved for an Ovation shallow bowl. This was nice looking, but I wasn't that impressed with how it played, sounded, or felt. Admittedly it was built for amplification purposes, but still I wasn't impressed. I hawked this one for a road trip to New Mexico.
Next was a Peavey electric (forget the model #, but the basic one that comes with a starter package). Basically an imitation strat, it was a great axe to learn on...but eventually sold it.
Then came an Ibanez. Again don't really remember model #, but $3-$400 range with H-S-H and Floyd Rose. Was a Musician's Friend exclusive custom, since it had the 2 buckers and the rose for so cheap. The only one I don't have anymore (sold it) that I kinda miss.
Yamaha 12-string acoustic. This was a gift from my brother who plays as well. Had a crack and broken tuners, but he salvaged it from his closet and did mild repairs to make it playable. Nothing like a 12.
Epiphone SG-400 Korina-I think that's how you spell it...its an 'exotic' wood, light, but with nice grain and natural finish (again a Musicians Friend exclusive). The stock tuners weren't doing it for me, so I replaced them. But awesome tone. By far my favorite axe. Once I got this, I shyed away from my Ibanez.
Lastly, my fiancee got me a Yamaha C-40 classical. Sure it's a bottom of the line student guitar, but it's got good sound. Had to sand my bridge to lower my action to my taste. From classical studies to Willy Nelson, there's just something unique about that nylon sound.
This has to be my longest post...but it was fun for me! Good memories.

I play an Ibanez GRX 40, since I've only been playing for about 9 months, so I only have one guitar. hopefully sometime in the next two or three months I'll be getting a second, haven't decided on one yet though.

I only play my faithful beat Up 87 and 93 Les Paul Stadnards, and 87 Les Paul custom. All of which have repaired necks so I got em cheap!
Then I have a bunch of Custom shop gibsons that I dont play, mainly cos they are reissues and have thick necks. Ive got a 54RI, 56RI, 58RI, and 68RIs, they are sunbursts, cherry/tobacco. I also have a couple of signed guitars, one is a signature slash les Paul signed by the man himself, and the other is an epiphone acoustic signed by everyone at the grammys. I dont mind epiphone acoustics, but stick to gibsons for electric.

Ack, I need to win the lottery or inherite a large sum of money, like, right now.
You could sell plasma. You can do it up to twice per week and get over $30 a pop. You could also sell other "bodily fluids" for even more $$$. If I'm ever down and out on cash, like really down and out, I'm going to sell one of my kidneys. You can get $50,000 on the black market for one, and you only need one to live.

04-09-2005, 01:15 PM
What year is your classic premium plus?
Chuck, making money is easy, its called arbitraging. You look for price descepencies and then expliot them. Simple example www.amazon.co.uk sell LOTR box set at £40, www.play.com sell if for £25. Therefore you go onto amazon.co.uk and list your brand new copy at a discount price of... say... £33. When someone buys it you then go onto play.com and buy is for 25 but put their address as the delivery. Thus you made 8 quid for nothing.
Thats a made up example, but I used to do if all the time with those two sites, play is cheap but not well known, amazon is big so people jus pay more for the name.
I do this with guitars too.

you don't know what your axe is? well, I'm not sure if I have a 100% understanding of it, but I believe it is the body of your guitar... for example, your guitar has a neck, and a fretboard, and tuners, and strings, and a bridge, and a pickguard, and pickups, and knobs, and an AXE... like that, either that, or it's just a cool name to call your guitar, there is probably some story behind it...

'Axe' refers to the whole guitar, as in:

What made you choose the p-90 instead of a Humbucker
wanting to be unique was a part of it, i'll admit. like you said, there are next to no P90'd lefties out there, this side of a really expensive Les Paul, or a really expensive and painfully uncommon SG.
i have always loved the P90 sound; I like the punchiness to them, the fact that they're almost ALL midrange and when you solo on the upper register, they have this delicious 1950's rock sound to them, and i got the DiMarzio P90 because it's a bit more modern than a traditional P90 and has a bit more output that's good for high gain.
Overall it's ended up awesome, because played clean, the combination of a Strat bridge with a P90 is a vintage sound that no one even knew existed: the snap and twang of a Strat bridge with the P90's chunky mids... sounds great! I did it to the strat because it was already routed out for a humbucker, and I figured that it would be fun, and also a good opportunity to get myself a P90 equipped guitar. The pickguard is from Warmoth, and I had to do a bit of routing and drop a block of Cherry into the body to get it to work right.
I also dig the white pickguard/black knobs and pickup covers look. I think it looks way better on a sunburst strat... kind of accents it a bit.

I play a Seagull S6+ Folk. I've had it for three years, and every time I go to lookin for another guitar, I just get frustrated because nothin really seems to have the same warm sound to me...maybe I'm just stuck on it 'cause it's my first non-painful guitar. I learned on my dads. The strings were so far off the neck it hurt to fret the thing. Now...Weight of my fingers!

Being a drummer for 8 years and now only a guitarist for about a year and a half, my collection unfortunately does not include any vintage guitars. Right now my main guitar is a Jackson KE-3 which is stock. I'll be upgrading hardware and pickups soon though. My first guitar was an LTD M-50. Against popular opinion and advice, I'm modding it. I've got pickups on the way and I'm thinking about putting a locking nut on it or upgrading the tuners or both. I wanted to upgrade the pickups on this one first since I've never done it before. That way if I screw it up it won't be too much of a loss. I've also got an LTD MH-400 that should be finally arriving in February I hope. Once I get that I'd like to get one of the older orange squire bullets and fix it up.

I have played several SRV, American EC, Eric Johnson models, but I like mine better. Maybe because my Strat is set-up the way I like it.

I own a JP MusicMan all options guitar :D I just got it 2 weeks ago and its the most amazing guitar I have ever played!! overall its fantastic!!
I just got one too! Got a seven string with the piezo pickup and the trem system, I went for the wood finish with the inwards burst effect though... couldnt get one at the right price with the reactive finish. Amazing guitar;-)
Also have a Gibson Les Paul Historic Goldtop '57 reissue, an Ibanez Jem "Bad Horsie" and an Ibanez Prestige custom. Definitly on my way to full blown axoholism!

ACOUSTIC: - Yamaha G-225A classical model, and
-An ancient Valencia 3/4 flamenco model. It's eight years older than I am, and it still stays in tune!

Recently my gear buying has gone overboard. This is an update to what I posted before. I now currently own the following
LTD M-50 in Flat Black
Jackson KE-3 Kelly in See Through Black
Agile AL2000 Les Paul Copy in Silver Burst finish
Kona Strat Copy in Blue Sunburst Finish (sounds like Clapton's and only cost me $75!!!)
Raven Les Paul Copy in See Through Green finish, this is the model before the company owner became mentally unstable
Washburn V with the Orange skull paint job
And on it's way sometime this month is a LTD MH-400 in See Through Blue finish
I've also been buying amps. I now own
(2) Peavey VTM 120 heads
Peavey Triumph 120 head
Peavey MX anvil case head
Peavey Festival head (from 1975)
(2) Mesa Boogie Mark III's (one is a blue stripe simuclass - not sure about the other)
Marshall MG10CD
Crate GX15 (currently out of order)
Global solid state amp of unknown wattage, has a great trem effect built in though
I've got three cabinets at home. One is a crate cabinet, not sure what model and I also have two Peavey MX anvil case 4x12 cabinets.
I'll be paying off my credit card for the next three years... :o
But was it worth it?..... :D You bet your ass it was

Just started a few weeks ago.
I have an Alvarez AD60SBK solid top. (black Johnny Cash style with ivory accents).
To me it's beautiful. :)
Next, some type of hollow body (because I'm leaning toward jazz and blues for my playing tastes). Don't know which type yet.

My Ovation and I have probably an unhealthy relationship.. it's more than love, it's harmonic wood lust.

Since I posted this, I sold my Fender Strat and now have an Epiphone Zakk Wylde buzzsaw on the way. Got the deal on the Epi through 357 Choppers, ordered the mp4 player for $158 ($190 with shipping) and got the Epi for FREE. Supposed to receive it in March. That was a very limited time offer...
Amp: Marshall JCM 800 / Marshall 1960ax 4x12 cab
Effects: ZW-overdrive, ZW-Wylde Wah, Boss 7 band eq, Boss digital delay.
I swear I don't just buy everything Zakk Wylde, I tried as many as I could and these things just sounded the best to my ears.
