there are lots of amps... i'll say a Mesa, I personally like the Mesa-Boogie tone; a Dual Recto if you can afford it, otherwise an F50 is about $900 new.
Marshalls are famously good too... i don't know too much about them though.

A lot depends on how lound you need to be, what styles you'll be playing, and how you'll be using the GT-8. Oh, and also how much you're willing to spend.

Well if your looking for great onboard distortion, then mabey take a look at some peavey tube heads(6505,XXX,JSX e.c.t).Then you'll still have enough money to by a 4x12 cab for the head(or 2x12 if you dont need to move that much air).
Is it me or are marshalls prices at an all time high?

Nope, it's not just you, and from what I hear, they're just going to continue to go up. Too bad the quality and concistancy is now where near the price range they're in. I still love Marshall's, but just can't justify paying what even a used DSL50/100 cost's. Maybe sometime in the future though....... after I make my first million

I can vouch for the Peavey XXX. Go over and have a look at this thread: XXX Review (http://www.guitartricks.com/forum/showthread.php?t=12537)

Have marshalls ever increased in price like this before?I wouldn't pay more than $1200 for a TSL100 let alone a 60.
I mean really,$1500 for an AVT stack, and the prices are still rising? They have lost their minds...
