Ok, I guess what I am trying to get at is how do I get that Gilbert style out of the major/minor modes and to get them to stop sounding so plain and boring.

Gilbert does a LOT of string skipping and sweeps.

You wont become Paul Gilbert over night, he is VERY accurate, and fast.

Paul gilbert does alot of string skipping, and he's damn good at it, like for example skipping from the high E to the low E at a ridiculous speed!

He doesn't sweep as much as you think. He says he finds it quite difficult to sweep so he only puts it in on little passing passages, just snippets here and there. Most of the time, what sounds like him sweeping, is actually him string skipping, sneaky bugger.
