so I'm trying to decide what I should get as my second guitar, just to know what I'm saving up for. I was thinking about getting an Epiphone Goth Les Paul, but I have 2 questions about it, first of all, what kind of pickups does that have? and second of all, should I get the floyd rose or set bridge style? I never use a whammy bar, but I wanted to know which would stay in tune better.

FRs are a huge pain the the behind. They are great once you have them set up however things like changing strings can take all morning !!

I have 10 guitars.

One of them has a Floyd Rose tremolo.

All of the rest are hard-tails.

I'm gonna sell one of them.

Guess which one. ;)

Don't overlook Schecter guitars. I have a C1 Blackjack and it is a really nice guitar! Actually, these past 2 weeks, I've hardly played my PRS  . I think they're excelent guitars for the price.

Oh, and I'm with LATS on the FR's. I have a very deep and unmentionable hatred for them.

I miss my tremolo...I'd even settle for a non-locking one just to accent some lead runs. Its a tool you can take for granted, but if you never learn to incorporate it into your playing then you wont be missing much.

That being said, yes a floyd will stay in tune better, but its not worth the trouble unless its an original floyd or high end ibanez copy...anything else is junk(except schaller or gotoh)

Stay away from epi's unless you want a 'dot' to play blues on or something...yuk!Suck it up and save for a LP studio or something.

And like prsplaya said, dont overlook schecters!

LP Studios are nice.

Massive bang for your buck.

I had a Teal blue one and regret selling it !

Yeah, but for distortion it seems too thin. I prefer to play on both. And actually, I REALLY love the sound of clean blues on the bridge pickup.

Really !

I used to stick it through the X88 Soldano model on the POD or the dirty channel on my MG15 and it would just rip it up ! !! Loved it !

Well, actually, it sounds GREAT when I do that live or in my room, BUT when I record it it sounds like the notes all have anorexia.

A couple of guitars that are great for the price.....

Gibson Flying V faded (our bass player has one, it has the same pickups that a Les Paul Classic has)

Gibson SG Gothic (I bought a used one for $450, nice guitar, especially the ebony fretboard, but I'm gonna change out the pup's, not hot enough for my taste)

Both can be bought for less than a grand......and they are Gibson's, not epi's....there is a big difference in quality.

trust me, I would like nothing more than owning a gibson, but the price is what made me look into epiphone. I have looked at the Gibson voodoo sg and les paul, and decided that I really would not mind having either, but the price of the sg is $950, and I was not looking at spending that much, eventually one day in the future I'll be able to get a guitar that costs that much, but for now, I kinda wanted to stay in the $400-500 price range. I did check out the faded flying V, and it does have the pickups that I want (496r and 500t) I also like the fact that it has a mahogany body and neck, and though I would prefer an ebony fingerboard, rosewood is my second choice. I heard that gibsons were made with superior wood than epiphones, and went through a much more difficult paint job, and that that was the only reason for the increased cost.

I dunno, I'm still looking around, and I'm really in no hurry to decide because I don't actually have any money for one, I'm just looking at what I should be saving up for.

Have you looked at Epiphone Elitists? I got an Epi Elitist LP Custom and it is GORGEOUS. And its pick-ups are made by Gibson.

an epiphone elitist les paul custom runs for $1,099 on musicians friend, for the same price I could get a gibson sg standard... so what would be the point? the only reason I would get an epiphone instead of a gibson is because of the cheaper price

Hey 6strings...if name doesn't matter to you then you may want to take a look at these...I'm tempted myself!

Go to http://www.rondomusic.net/electricguitar-ss5.html and look around.

I heard that gibsons were made with superior wood than epiphones, and went through a much more difficult paint job, and that that was the only reason for the increased cost.
saying that the only reason that a GIbson costs more is because of the wood is like saying that the only reason a Lexus costs more than a really nice Hyundai is because it is built on a more stable chassis.

I'll be one of the first to say that Gibsons, PRS', Fenders, etc can be overrated (don't kill me for that one, please guys... emphasis on "can") but at the same time the wood is what set the stage for most of your guitar's natural sound. Though the electronics have a huge effect on the guitar's sound as well, putting a handmade Duncan antiquity into a plywood Kmart guitar will sound as bad as a Kmart guitar's pickup in a custom shop Rosewood Strat.

You can pick up some of the lower end Gibson SG's used for about the same as a high end Epiphone and sometimes that is the way to go. The big problem with a guitar like an Epiphone is that they are made in such massive volumes that there are so many ways the quality can fluctuate. What I would emphasize the most is playing the exact, particular guitar that you are going to buy, the exact same one that will reside in your hands, and not one from the same production run. there are some Squiers that sound particularly nice and some Gibsons that are total duds. I almost bought a lefty Studio LP about a year ago because the price was good, and when I plugged it in, it sounded like garbage. I vastly prefer my Mexican strat :D

Look at used Gibsons and look at the Epiphones, and when you're out looking also be sure to look at Yamahas, Arias, Samicks, etc etc and see what feels and sounds the best. that's the only surefire way to go.

I don't really know what to say that hasn't been said already. I have 6 guitars and each one sounds and feels different from the others. I'm still learning on guitar technician type stuff so I can only really confidentally talk out of my ass when I talk about what makes a guitar good vs bad. I know that a lot goes into making a guitar good and when I bought my SG I almost bought an Epiphone for the sake of money but decided that I wanted something I wouldn't feel ripped off for getting. In turn I basically shelled out over twice as much and got a Gibson. This doesn't mean to say that all Epiphones are crap. A friend of mine as well as my father both have Epiphone Les Pauls and both felt and played great. I've yet to actually play on a Gibson Les Paul though. Another friend of mine has an Epiphone Explorer and it plays very well too. The neck wasn't quite as fast on the Explorer as say some other instruments I'd played on but that was pretty much expected. There will be noticeable differences between a Gibson and an Epiphone. Of course you'll be saving money longer to buy one. Just look at it like this. Are you good enough to holster a Gibson or do you have some more work ahead of you before you are good enough to use it to its full potential?

Iv'e been comparing a lot of the Korean, Chinese like Jay Turser, OLP, Rogue
etc. I'm impressed. PUPs a bit whimpy but all things considered, not bad.
I find that i'm playing my Rogue more than my fender Jazz bass. Great deal for under $200. Way under. Name brand decals on the headstock are cool but you pay for them.

Tradition and Dillion are pretty good as far as "no-name" imports. Tradition in particular makes some nice, cheapish instruments.

 holy smokes! I just realized it was you that won that guitar! Nice catch. I wish there some better picture's though. Congratulation!

I myself have lost 2 bids in a row recently. One went for a little more than I wanted to spend, and the other, someone hijacked it during the last few seconds and I couldn't get in fast enough to up the bid  I lost by $2

 holy smokes! I just realized it was you that won that guitar! Nice catch. I wish there some better picture's though. Congratulation!... No such luck! :(

I had to allow for an additional $150 to cover the packing, shipping, Customs Duty, and brokerage fees. That closing bid was all I could afford. If you look again, you'll see that the reserve was not met. The seller got a better offer off-line.

... but it would'a been nice... :)
