What is hybrid picking?
Is it when you don't do all alternate picking, but like 2 upstrokes then 3 downstrokes and then 1 upstroke?

i've heard "hybrid picking" and "economy picking" referred to as the same thing before so i'm going to wager that maybe they actually are the same technique.

at least as far as it goes with economy picking... the whole idea is to pick fluidly according to what it is that you're playing. i.e., if you play two notes on one string (downstroke/upstroke) and then you play a note on the next string up and then the note on the first string you played, so the whole affair would look like this:

G--5-7----8---
D-------7------
A--------------

rather than playing downstroke, upstroke, downstroke, upstroke, you would instead play downstroke upstroke upstroke downstroke, because it follows a natural flow based on where the notes are. provided you've gotten your alternate picking down pat, it makes riffs flow a lot more fluidly.

did that make sense?

Leading on from Pony Ones post. It's about taking the shortest and therefore most efficient route whilst picking. So you don't necessarily stick to strict alternate picking, you pick whichever way is the most efficient for whatever you're playing.

That's if economy picking is the same as hybrid picking...

Doc?

Ahhh, now I see.

As regards the dude who orginally posted this thread: try looking in the tricks part of this site, there's more than likely some useful exercises in there. Have fun.

yes, hybrid picking is using your pick and fingers at the same time....it's like the beatles "blackbird" except you use a pick...a good song to use for hybrid picking is three libras-perfect circle :)

oh, okay...

i know a Zakk Wylde run that is a good exersize for that; he calls it his "Clown Show" lick because he says it sounds like "something you'd hear at a clown show." I haven't been to a clown show but i'll take his word for it.

E---------15---------15---------15-
B--11/12----------------------------
G------------11/12------------------
D------------------------11/12------
A------------------------------------
E------------------------------------

use your index finger to slide from the 11th to 12th fret and keep your pinky depressed on the 15th fret the whole time. Pick the B string and slide, then use your middle finger to pluch the high E string. sounds pretty neat.

Imagine that. I've never heard of such a technique. And go figure that I do just that out of habit.

YEah hybrid picking and economy picking are the same exact thing. :) The way Pony One explained it was absoulutely correct. Its basiccally always picking in the direction of the next string you play regardless of the last pick stroke direction. Its also used to play sweep arrpegios although thats more often called sweep picking. Personnaly I think strict alternate picking flows far better once your used to it-- and you'll never have to think about your next pickstroke in an improvised run. -- And the thing rory gallgher does isn't hybrid pickin g its called chicken pickin'

No its not i can't hybrid pick i'am looking for some examples of it. But I know for a fact hybrid picking is using your pick and your fingers. By picking the the top Strings the strings and plucking the bottom the strings. I just found this on a website to stop all the uncertainty about it :p

(http://www.guitarnoise.com/article.php?id=406) A quote of that!!!!!
Hybrid Picking works equally well for both rhythm and lead playing. In rhythm playing the pick strikes bass notes while the fingers pluck higher strings in a piano like fashion (i.e. striking the notes of the chord together as opposed to in sequence as in a strum). In lead playing, rapid-fire licks can be executed across wide intervals, as the pick and fingers strike different strings, nanoseconds apart.
Jk

Rory Gallagher uses hybrid picking which IS useing ur pick and fingers, chicken picking is using ur pick and fingers also but like the claw hammer tech it has more of a rhythm feel behind it.. a good ex of chicking picking can be found in Direstraits song Sultans of swing at the end of solo 2..
