I'm looking for some good inspirational music. I was inspired to start playing by my dad so I don't know what most of the greats sound like and I think my playing is suffering from it.

Listen to Hendrix's Red House, if you want to get that blues feel. Learn it and it will be really usefull. I learned it, you will learn a lot of good little licks. Also listen to his music, to see how he voiced his chords and broke them up. What kind of music are you into?

Thanx, I'm into everything really. But I enjoy alternative music the most.

If your into Alternative music the most you show look into the Stone Temple Pilots. Their guitar work for alternative standards is amazing they use really freaky chords in some of their songs....scarry really fun as hell to play though.

if you like alternative try listening to some of the old pearl jam. pick up on mike mccreadys technique. ive been using his soloing for inspiration for about 6 of the 8 years ive been playing. try some hendrix too. he may not be alternative but hes knows how to rip it up on guitar

Ya well I haven't played long enough to get a huge collection of songs that I can play very well. Plus, my guitar teacher spends like 2 months on each song that I learn, so I'll just list the ones I know (this is acoustic).
1. 4 and 20 years ago by dude I really don't know
2. the wizard by uriah heep
3. oh **** I forgot what it's called by extreme
4. dead or alive by bon jovi

Go ahead and add Judas Priest's Painkiller to it. That song pretty much sums up what true heavy metal should sound like.

Stratovarius? I dunno. Timo Tolkki is a bit sloppy. Only my opinion, though...

Dude, it's the same as drop-D except all the stings are then detuned an additional whole step. So, first tune the low E string to D, then another whole step down to C. Then Tune all the other strings (ADGBE) down a whole step.

I don't get why so many metal bands detune all the time, though. You can tune to f*cking X without sounding heavy. Heaviness is all about technique, tone, and being in sync with your band. Listen to early Metallica (Master of Puppets and ...And Justice for all especially) and then listen to a Korn album. Now, I don't mind Korn, but in terms of heaviness, Metallica is like "THUNK! THUNK! THUNK! THUNK!" and Korn is like "BROOOOM... BROOOM.... BROOOM....."

Of course, there are bands that use low tunings AND manage to sound really heavy. Dream Theater and Lost Prophets are some of the ones that spring to my mind. And of course Slipknot and Pantera. I just don't find that "sludgy" sound very heavy.

Hmm... What was the subject again?:)

i most definetly agree that thunk thunk is better than broom broom another good one i s fade to black.but the problem is i cant find another guitarist with that much dedicartion to the band so. im screwed i have to go with broom broom instead of thunk thunk.untill i find more dedicated band members see what im sayin?

If you guys want somthing heavy, wicked and extremly sick, just listen to Messugah (spelling) from Sweden. These guys are music psychos and they are best in the world in doing that. However I donīt like but itīs cool in a way.

Or Dimmu Borgir from Norway. But that's more scary than heavy. And satanic...

If you are truly a beginner then I would recommend that you start with some of Nirvana's stuff. I also like just about all music (jazz, blues, classical, rock, hard rock, metal, heavy metal, alternative, thrash, etc...) and I think that Kurt Cobain ripped on that Fender Strat with some of the simplest yet coolest licks you could ever play. A little bit of the right crunch and the right kind of power and you are on your way...

Have fun!

if beginner i suggest ac dc (someof them) just to be rockin! Nirvana and metallica i guess....though i m not a big nirvana fan. chords from van morrison, beatles etc. cuz most old stuff is easy

intermediate is gnr absolutly,

advanced is once again gnr, and some old stuff like lynard skynard ...some van halen....it is for your dad you said right? then lynard skynard for sure!

1-Time-Pink Floyd(even though the solo is easy, it sounds perfect for the song)
2-Sympathy For The Devil-The Rolling Stones
3-Stairway To Heaven-Led Zeppelin(the entire point of the song is the guitar)
4-Good Riddance-Green Day(just a catchy tune)
5-And almost anything from Keith Richards, David Gilmour, and Jimi hendrix

my inspirations stay mainly in metal and punk, some alternative stuff i guess.
I love Jimi Hendrix, but i dont' try to play like him at all, i'm just constantly in awe of him collosal talents.
I can't get enough of Randy Rhoads, i definitely suggest trying out the Ozzy good stuff he did avec Randy. I suggest "Crazy Train", "Over the Mountain"(i really only like the solo), and "Mr.Crowley" as starters.
Ozzy also did some work with Jake E. Lee, i suggest "Bark At The Moon" to sample his brilliance.
also, early Metallica have great soloing and riffing capabilities that definitely inspire.
i love punk energy and rhythms and the whole life behind it.
I would suggest Pennywise and any one of their six albums, i might suggest their latest one "Land of the Free?" but any one is great work.
Blink 182 is always good. anything, Enema of the State, The Mark Tom and Travis Show, but Take Off Your Pants and Jacket is too mainstream pour moi.
hope i helped a bit, i just love all metal mostly. oldschool had the riffs and solos that made it all possibe, so check out Ozzy and early Metallica and definitely Black Sabbath.
