i've been selling cars for about 2 and a half years now, which is something to claim for being 21 years old. It was a good ride while it lasted. sort of. monetarily, it was definitely good, considering it's not a job that you have to go to college for 4 years to do (i claimed over 40k on my taxes this last year; again, in retrospect, not bad for a 21 year old kid who has a GED and ADHD :D) and it allowed me to do such wonderful things as get my Kramer and switch pickups over and over, drive a late model high-end car, and save up some $$$ for rainy days.

but about two months ago I started to get really sick of it. the hours blew. i live about 15 minutes on a sunday morning or 30 minutes on a weekday morning from the dealership, so the commute wasn't bad, but, i generally woke up around 7.30am, drove in to get there around 8.30 and left sometime between 7.30pm and 9.00pm. yippee!!! 40k+ a year for 80+ hours a week...

I got promoted to fleet manager; the youngest fleet manager for VW in the country. basically I was in charge of ordering vehicles for the dealership and also in charge of dealing with internet customers and also with any businesses that wanted to buy bulk (not as common for VW as it is for Ford, GM etc). better pay plan for more hours. great.

I grew up sh!t poor and I have no desire to go back, and for awhile was losing sight of the bigger picture. Most of my coworkers have been professional car salesmen for 5-25 years and are 30-50. i would catch myself thinking "crap, i'm a failure... there are people in this industry that make 100k plus a year... what the hell, i need to pick up the pace" and then stop myself and go "DUDE, quit being a retard, your friends are all drinking and making $500/month and mooching off their parents!!! get a grip!!!"

I have wanted to go back to school for awhile now and unfortunately the car business doesn't lend itself to schoolin'. so, last saturday, I called it quits. My managers understood and we left on good terms, and I'm looking forward to starting some of my courses next semester.

in the meantime, I'm looking back at hotels for work; I was making close to what I am now when I did it back in Boston, and I only put in 32-40 hours a week, and when traffic was low I didn't have the owner/managers breathing down the back of my neck. If the hotel thing doesn't work... i don't know. I'm open to suggestions.

I plan to take music theory and then guitar as courses in addition to the necessary math, english, etc BS which I'll probably blow through anyway. ultimately, I plan to be a lawyer; take that all you guys who whine about frivilous lawsuits being the downfall of our country :D so I'll also have to take American History and maybe some sociology classes.

no real point to this post, just thought I'd share.

I would try to make something of myself, but its mountain I shudder to climb(years of college, long work hours for 40+ years, short retirement and then death)

I really don't know what to do in the long run.I'm happy with my unimportance, but it dosn't serve well when socializing with people.

It upsets me that I can't just live and enjoy it...since that is considerd being a bum.You have to toil and maintain yourself to some invisible level where your life is compatible with other people.

I'm extremley close to throwing in the towel to 'normal' avenues in life and bury myself in a charismatic christian establishment or music scene for money and living.

Wear some white clothes, sing about jesus and make money...sounds good.

I just wrote my LSAT a month ago. To be honest, i hate school...well i dont mind it if i see progression. I get my degree in a months time and hopefully off to med school. The downside is i dont touch my g'tar for months at a time and i can see it there, just staring at me.

If u wanna be a lawyer, take anything u want. It doesnt matter what courses u take, if your prone or have the ability to be a lawyer that will show on your LSAT. I suggest take something that u enjoy and find interesting, but at the same time take something that is applicable...u dont want be the vast majority of graduates who get out and just get a job they could of had without a degree.

The good thing is u get to play more guitar! Also try to enjoy the trip, have fun and socialize while at school or else ur gonna look back and see a degree with zero memories and that would suck so bad.

feel free... though I no longer work in the biz, i still know how it works :D

yeah, i've spoken to quite a few lawyers, and all of them, including the dean of Loyola University's legal dept, said that prelaw courses are really not worth the money or time or effort, and that you're better served just going ahead and taking whatever courses you feel like taking.

chuck, i don't think that living your life as you enjoy it would necessarily mean being seen as a "bum" unless by unimportance you mean living on the street, sleeping in doorways, and never showering or bathing. i don't really think that that invisible level that people see you as being is important at all; i think it is much more important that what you do makes you happy and allows you to enjoy the things that will give your life meaning.

ADD is the greatest!! I love it!

I would recomend taking classes at a community college if you can. It is a lot cheaper and you transfer the credit, not the grade to a University. I am currently taking classes at a community college and love it! It is pretty much high school part 2! I'm not going to transfer though, just get my associates in liberal arts.
I could very well make $100,000 in about 3 months!!! I dont have to have any college either, all I will need is a whole lot of cahones!!! I'm going to go crab fishing in Alaska the winter of '07. Alaskan crab fishing is the most dangerous occupation in the world! And has the highest death rate out of any job in the world! (about 1 out of 250 people die) I can't wait! Hopefuly I'll come back alive with a tone of money and invest in real estate.
