i've been selling cars for about 2 and a half years now, which is something to claim for being 21 years old. It was a good ride while it lasted. sort of. monetarily, it was definitely good, considering it's not a job that you have to go to college for 4 years to do (i claimed over 40k on my taxes this last year; again, in retrospect, not bad for a 21 year old kid who has a GED and ADHD :D) and it allowed me to do such wonderful things as get my Kramer and switch pickups over and over, drive a late model high-end car, and save up some $$$ for rainy days.
but about two months ago I started to get really sick of it. the hours blew. i live about 15 minutes on a sunday morning or 30 minutes on a weekday morning from the dealership, so the commute wasn't bad, but, i generally woke up around 7.30am, drove in to get there around 8.30 and left sometime between 7.30pm and 9.00pm. yippee!!! 40k+ a year for 80+ hours a week...
I got promoted to fleet manager; the youngest fleet manager for VW in the country. basically I was in charge of ordering vehicles for the dealership and also in charge of dealing with internet customers and also with any businesses that wanted to buy bulk (not as common for VW as it is for Ford, GM etc). better pay plan for more hours. great.
I grew up sh!t poor and I have no desire to go back, and for awhile was losing sight of the bigger picture. Most of my coworkers have been professional car salesmen for 5-25 years and are 30-50. i would catch myself thinking "crap, i'm a failure... there are people in this industry that make 100k plus a year... what the hell, i need to pick up the pace" and then stop myself and go "DUDE, quit being a retard, your friends are all drinking and making $500/month and mooching off their parents!!! get a grip!!!"
I have wanted to go back to school for awhile now and unfortunately the car business doesn't lend itself to schoolin'. so, last saturday, I called it quits. My managers understood and we left on good terms, and I'm looking forward to starting some of my courses next semester.
in the meantime, I'm looking back at hotels for work; I was making close to what I am now when I did it back in Boston, and I only put in 32-40 hours a week, and when traffic was low I didn't have the owner/managers breathing down the back of my neck. If the hotel thing doesn't work... i don't know. I'm open to suggestions.
I plan to take music theory and then guitar as courses in addition to the necessary math, english, etc BS which I'll probably blow through anyway. ultimately, I plan to be a lawyer; take that all you guys who whine about frivilous lawsuits being the downfall of our country :D so I'll also have to take American History and maybe some sociology classes.
no real point to this post, just thought I'd share.
