I had a question regarding technique from a tab

the following tab from an arpeggio (Dm in Eugene's Bag Trick):

e :-----------10-13-10--------
B :---------10---------10-----
G :-----7-10-------------10-7
D :----7----------------------
A :-5-8-----------------------
E :5--------------------------

I would like to know how the fingering is supposed to work. I think it's supposed to go (finger-1....pinky-4)...

1-1-4-1-1-3-3-3-4-3-3-3-1

... in progressing notes. I hope that's not too confusing. I'd appreciate any feedback!

Try it this way.

e----------------------10-13-10--------------------
b-------------------10----------10-----------------
g----------------10----------------10--------------
D-------------12----------------------12-----------
A----------12----------------------------12--------
E-5-10-13-----------------------------------13-10--

If you prefere the pattern you typed , I think it would be better to finger like this :
1-1-4-1-1-4-1-1-4 and the same way descending.

maybe try refingering it, try to keep it all in one position if you can. its not very economic, too many position shifts if you ask me

Thank you for making life easier. That was the one arpeggio I was having serious trouble with. appreciate it sir

actually, at the moment this works best

e----------------------10-13-10--------------------
b-------------------10----------10-----------------
g----------------10----------------10--------------
D-------------12----------------------12-----------
A-0--------12----------------------------12--------
E---10-13-----------------------------------13-10--

...I mute the open A when I play the 10... It's just a good thing I don't sweep pick this cause I don't see how that would work

A lesson learned in life : The fingering in tabs isn't usualy the best , that's if the tabs were assumed to be accurate !

About sweeping , some people play arpeggios like this one with alternate picking , but you'll come close to the sweeping speed with alternate picking.
To sweep pick this Dmin arp :
1) Pick the E-10 with a down stroke
2) Hammer-on to E-13
3) Continue with the downstrokes up to e-10
4) Pick the 13 with an upstroke
5) Pull-off to e-10
6) Continue with the upstrokes

You can also start the E-10 with an upstroke and downstrike the E-13 instead , if you don't want to hammer on.

appreciated, I know tabs aren't always accurate and sometimes I trust them a little more than I should but... anyways, yea I think I'll try to be consistent in alternate picking this instead of sweep picking it. The reason is right now I just feel way uncomfortable sweep picking. Something I'll have to work on eventually but 1st priority right now: work out my pathetic alternate picking. Once I get a little quicker with my fretting hand I'll start sweeping :P

Setting goals and achieving them indicates you're on the right track ... Good luck dude . :)

They're correct. He's using the same tabs I used to learn it. I fretted it differently. 1-1-4-1-1-1-1-1-4-1-1-1-1-1-4-1-1 ( I barred with my index and slid up to the first 10).

I know this particular tab is accurate , but the fingering is a little awkward ... It's much easier my way.

can u give me the fingering pattern during down and up sweeps for the above arpeggio and can u please explain how to execute the sweep ?
(i think the down sweep pattern is 1-1-4-3-3-1-1-1-4-1 , but i am confused whether to hold my index finger as a barre chord or to slide them down as i go down to the high-E )

is that song inspired from nicolo panganini 5th caprice in A minor?? lol im learning that right now...its a good exercise as well

yea it's steve vai's take on the 5th caprice by paganini.

Well I don't really like sliding my index finger all that much if it's not necessary. I think I'll stick with 1-1-4-1-1-3-3-3-4-3-3-3-1

Also, I alternate pick it. I had to give my fingers a day of rest. I went at it hardcore for like five days and I guess my fingers just weren't ready for the torture.

What a beautiful song if you can get it down. Especially once you get done with the arpeggios and you can play the final lick. I love it!

Yes , hold your index as in a barre chord throughout the whole arpeggio , and you've got the fingering correctly .
