I am Damir from Central Asia(Uzbekistan). I am a praise leader at church. I need help in picking some of praise songs, like "In a secret, In a quite place..." or any good worship and praise songs with picking(if possible by showing different styles of picking).
May God bless all of you!!!

I am also involved in the worship leading at church and it's nice to know there are others out there that use their music in ministry... as a matter a fact that very song is one I have done (It's called "I want to know you"). I am also a finger picker and try to throw some of the picking into some of the songs.... I need to dig up that song and see if I can tab out how you might pick it. I tried to give you a pattern before but I couldn't explain it clearly enough. It's hard sometimes to slow down my picking enough to step by step explain what I am doing when I pick (so, sorry bout that). Can you read tab and also, what key do you play that song in???

You can finger pick any worship song. Just learn the chords and pick them as patterns, that's what I do. Just worship God and do whatever you want. God is all that matters.

This would be dumb:
If by any change in the world your into metal, do Metallica-Creeping Death. Before anyone says anything, its not a song insulting relegion, it simply tells a more harsher version of Moses and the 10 pleages on the Egyptians.

Thanks Lori. :p It's wonderful that you also worship leader. It's ok that you can't slow down keep goin'. May our Lord's Name be glorified eventually. Unfortunately I can't read tab but I want to. I do use the following chords in the praise song "I want to know you": G, C ... C, G, Em, D, G. Did you get what key?
Hope hearing from you soon.

Hmmm... I don't think it's okay to sing metallicca songs in church. they don't support christianity so why should their lyris be sung in church? In the youth band I play in (the leader used to be a shredder back in the 80's by the way so he knows every metallicca lick ever made) we do borrow licks from metallica and iron maiden and use them in songs. I do like metalicca and iron maiden but i believe most of their lyrics are not fit to be in church. Anyway our worship is loud and we really rock out the whole time. we just do our own versions of the songs, we don't try to make it exactly like the it is on the cd or anything. In fact we use distortion not an organ :D We play from our hearts and that's what worship music is all about.

Yes, that is in the key of G. I usually play that song in D but it isn't too hard to transpose to G.... My suggestion is this; learn to read tab because a lot of music and the explination of how to do things will open up for you. It's really hard to tell you a way in which you could pick that without putting it in tab form... reading tab is really easy, one type is just a picture of your guitar strings and frets with finger placements shown as dots (you see this type in chord charts). Then another type would be where there are horizontal lines representing your strings with numbers that represent which fret/note to play.
For example:
G chord shown in Tab
E--3----
B--0----
G--0----
D--0----
A--2----
E--3----
The notes to the left indicate which string and the numbers show which fret/note your to play. The 0 indicates you have no fingers pushing down anything on that string but played open. An X or an empty line would mean that you don't sound/play that string at all. Also, being that they are all stacked in a line means they are played at the same time. If they were staggered like below you would play those same notes only one at a time like an arpeggio.
E-----------3-
B---------0---
G-------0-----
D-----0-------
A---2---------
E-3-----------
Here's how you might pick that same G chord in tab. I'm going to add below a finger assignment so you will know which fingers to use on your picking hand. Thumb=T, Index=1, Middle=2, Ring=3 (classically it would be P,I,M,A)
E-------------3----------
B--------0---------0-----
G-----0----0----0----0--
D------------------------
A------------------------
E---3--------------------
----T-1-2-1--3--1-2--1
Well, I hope that helped ya out some in reading tab as well as a picking pattern. Incidently, that is the same pattern I tried to explain very poorly before. It's a very basic pattern that works well with a lot of chords, you can easily use that pattern for the entire song (altho I wouldn't recommend that because it would start to sound really redundant but it is a good pattern to start out with). The only difference would be that you would want to change which note you play as the bass so it is the root of the chord.... mmm, also... that song as is most of the worship music in the style you are doing is wrote in 4/4 time. The timming of that pattern would be that each note is played as an 8th note (half a beat per note and counted as: 1 and 2 and 3 and 4 and).
Blessings,
Lori

Thank you for explaining how tab works. Now I am getting aware of tab gredually. You shared one patern of picking style. Actully I know this style. But it helped me how tab works. Thanks. Do you know any other patern in picking? If yes do please share with me. I know one more easy one and want to share with you:
E----------3------------------3---------
B-------0-----0------------0-----0------
G----0-----------0------0-----------0---
D--------------------0------------------
A----2------------------2---------------
E--3------------------------------------
---T-1--2--3--2--1--T--1--2--3--2--1---
Did I realy get what tab is?
Maybe you know this, if not enjoy!
God bless you all.

yup, I think you've got the idea I'm glad I could help :)
I understood your tab, good job. I don't think I woulda fingered it quite like that but it works. You can create your own patterns off the chords pretty easily. You just need to listen to the rythem and mood of the song. You can try adding some hammer ons and pull offs in some spots for some flavor too. Here is another pattern to add to your collection from the same G chord. It works with a lot of chords but you need to do a lil bit of shifting on some of them:
E--3-----------3---3--
B--------------0------
G-------0---0----0----
D---------0-----------
A----2----------------
E--3---------------3--
---T-T-1-T-1-2--1-T-
---3----------3----3-
Also, here is a few worship music resources on the web if you haven't already found them.

Thanks Lori for a new style. I should try it today. I also visited webs you recommended. And there I faced with such tabs that couldn't figure out. For inctance:
------12---------------------------------------------------------------
-16--------12-------------12---------12--------------------------------
-----------------------------------------------------------------14----
----------------13---14--------13-14----13---14--------13---14---------
--------------------------------------------------16-------------------
-----------------------------------------------------------------------
What are these large numbers mean? Are these numbers of frats? Can you do these in 6 stringed guitar?
Thanks anyway.
God bless you!!!

Yeah, you do that one the same way as the other tabs... the lines show your strings and the numbers are your frets. So, your playing stuff on the 16th and 12th fret, etc. That would be difficult to play on a regular accoustic because the body of the guitar starts to get in the way around the 14th fret but still it could be done. I'm curious what song that goes to? Also, I only showed you a very basic idea of how you read tab. There are all sorts of other notations that your going to see like hammer-ons, pull-offs, harmonics, slides, etc. and not everyone is going to give you the fingering...

Hi Lori,
I hope you are doing ok? Ectually what do you do? As for me, I teach students at University at my town skills of computer. If you have any questions about my life fill free to drop lines in my email: hojadamir :p yahoo.com
Do you know Shane Everett and Bernard ("Psalm", "Psalm", "Rock wont cry", "Window to the Inner Court" etc albums). I relly like to listen their praise songs to God. And how they strum guitar it is God's given telent and blessing. I how one day I would also praise our Lord Jesus Christ in such way or more.
Can you make me please a tab for some of praise songs of theirs. For instance to "Breath of God" or "Ancient of Days " or "Glory(if possible with it's Itro part)". If possible with the style of pickings and strumings.
Thank you in advance.
May God bless you.

I faced one tab that didn't understand it teaches how to play but I couldn't catch up. It was like this:
When you see all numbers in a line one after another
E---3------------------------- String 1
B---3------------------------- String 2
G---4------------------------- String 3
D---5------------------------- String 4
A---5------------------------- String 5
E---3------------------------- String 6
...it means you play the entire chord using all strings
Which one starts first?
Or couldn't understand the differance between "Hammer On(h)" ,"Pull Off(p)", "Bend(b)". Do you know any link that explains it as if they are showing it on guitar.
Thank you again for this too.
May God bless you.
;)

I´m not good at explaining stuff, but I can try
chord, you beginn hitting the above ''e'' string and you move downwards to the string at the bodom.
hammer on, let´s say that your playin on string ''D'' you quickly put your finger down on the fret your playing on, for instance
E----------------------------- String 1
B----------------------------- String 2
G----------------------------- String 3
D---5h6---------------------- String 4
A----------------------------- String 5
E----------------------------- String 6
for instance, play on ''d'' fret five, with the index finger, and than you just hammer on the middle finger on fret 6, play on 5, and hammer on 6
pull off, for instance, your playin on string ''a'' fret 7, you just hit that string with your right arm index finger and you pull of, you play on it and instantly just pull off the left arm index finger
E-----------------------------
B-----------------------------
G-----------------------------
D-----------------------------
A---7p(pull off after playing on string)
E-----------------------------
bend, thats the easy part, you just bend the string. For instance, if you playin on ''B'' fret 4, you just bend it, up or down, or both up and down, like this:
E----------------------------- String 1
B-----4^--or--4\/-------------String 2
G----------------------------- String 3
D----------------------------- String 4
A----------------------------- String 5
E----------------------------- String 6
I´m sure you did not understand a bit of that, I understand, after all I´m not that good at explaining stuff

I don't believe I have heard of them before. I found a couple of their songs and am going to download "Carry Away" to listen to. So, far tho.. I haven't found any of the songs or album titles you mentioned. ... As far as your questions about which one is first in that chord. I think that depends on the sound you want from it... usually tho, when strumming I go from the bass strings toward the high for the first strum....
About the explination of how to do hammer ons, etc. Have you tried to see if there is a tutorial on this site? I'll see what I can find.....

I'm just curious: I've never realized there were Christians in Uzbekistan. Also, since you guys were under Soviets for so long, I would imagine there should be Christian Orthodox churches, which generally do not have music as part of the service. Is yours a different kind of church?

There isn't anywhere in the entire world where you won't find Christians...
I think the lyrics of this song says it best (by the way, Damir, Have you ever done this song? It's my favorite and makes me cry everytime I hear it or play it):
He Reigns
---------C
It's the song of the redeemed
G --------------------D
Rising from the African plain
---------C
It's the song of the forgiven
G------------------------D
Drowning out the Amazon rain
-------------C
The song of Asian believers
G--------------------D
Filled with God's holy fire
-----------------------C
It's every tribe, every tounge, every nation
---G -------------------------D
A love song born of a grateful choir
Chorus:
It's all God's children singin'
C------------G
Glory, glory, hallelujah
-----D
He reigns, He reigns
-------C
Let it rise above the fore-winds
G-------------------------D
Caught up in the heavenly sound
--------------------------C
Let praises echo from the towers of cathedrals
---------G--------------------D
To the faithful gathered underground
-------------------------------C
Of all the songs sung from the dawn of creation
G----------------------D
Some were meant to persist
---------------------------C
Of all the bells rung from a thousand steaples
G--------------------D
None rings truer than this
------------C
And all the powers of darkness
G----------------------------D
Tremble at what they've just heard
--------------C
Cause all the powers of darkness
G-----------------------D
Can't drown out a single word
When all God's children sing out
C-------------G
Glory, Glory Hallelujah
-----D
He reigns, He reigns
All God's children sing out
C-----------G
Glory Glory Hallelujah
-----D
He reigns, He reigns
All God's people sing out
C------------G
Glory Glory Hallelujah
-----D
He Reigns, He reigns

Hi everibody,
I have been saved in May, 2003. Still baby, though growing in HIS GRACE and LOVE. Who think that there aren't christian or christian churches, thay make big mistake. Where I serve my LORD JESUS CHRIST, I serve as a praise leader, and sometimes preach. Our church doesn't have denomination. We gather in the name of Jesus Christ and we worship, pray, fast, give offerings, have fellowship and His name is being glorified. Before I was kinda muslim, but praise the LORD!!! :)
In Uzbekistan many people are being converted into christianity, because HIS had is touching our land. Still there are persecution, no registraton for churches...(This may be one prayer request)
God bless all of you!

If someone sounds like they are a serious christian (and being a worship team leader, unless proven otherwise, tells me you are one), it's really not nice to bring up something like that. Some jokes are easy to get. Others like this one are not. But it's OK. After all, we have our own "bible", the GT code of conduct, and if someone breaks it, there's people who are very good at dealing with it.

Damir who would think your question would cause such a debate about religion. In America it seems it is a sin to be a Christian. It seems to be the stance of a rebel in this country. So being a Christian is the alternative lifestyle of today.
