how many players use their little pinky past the 12th fret? i for one tend to lose it after around the 15th fret (i do have chunky fingers tho) yet i've seen Michael Angelo use the pinky right up to the 24th or so. Anyway, i was just curious to know what others player preferences are.

For me it depends on what i'm playing. It might be more efficient to use your finger or it might be more efficient to your you third finger. All depends on where the lick is coming from and where it is going.

I use my pinky up that high on the neck...I've got really small hands with short fingers though, so I almost have to use my pinky.

it depends how many fingers are required by the lick.

sometimes it is easier to perform stretches with your little finger rather than move your hand in order to use a different finger.

I notice a lot of guitar players, when they play their pinky curls up into ball and comes on when they use it. I also notice those are the people who rarely use the pinky past the 12th fret. I was taught classical guitar at first, so I have a habit of always keeping the pinky at equal level with all other fingers. It makes sense to me too. The frets get smaller, and the pinky is pretty small too...so use it! So in answer to the question. I use my pinky a lot after the 12fret.
