my girl plays guitar :D though she has no internet, no money for lessons and she ain't allowed to get an electric guitar, so she settles with an acoustic one, this way her progress is going slow but she got talent

Some girls play guitar, but it's definitely a male-dominated field. I can't think of why, except that girls tend to have softer hands (it's more lotion than genetics).

And yes, we do have at least one female guitarist here.

there are actually sever female guitarist in this forum, but only one that is very active (at least that I can tell).

Yeah, but if they can grip the fretboard.... ;)

Yeah, we've got a few female guitarists here, and a couple of them could give you a run for your money, so watch out!

Yup every chick I know that plays guitar is like that. They learn a couple of chords then give up but continue to say they 'play' guitar

A search of the old threads will reveal dozens of talented players. And we have at least 10 female members that I know of. And that's just the ones who have identified themselves as being female.

so there's like no girls we really know of.so if there is any girls out there feel free to post and tell us wrong but you have to be decent at the guitar just not one that wants a boy and says she can play guitar.

I can't really see a point to this thread, but ahwell.

I know a girl who plays guitar, she's recently passed grade 5 music, so i'm guessing she can play something.

I'm surprised holly hasn't came in here and kicked some ass.

....... hmm....... my old hobby before discovering the guitar was skateboarding... same thing, basically a girl would learn to stand on the thing and then say that she skateboards... only ugly ones actually learned to do tricks. and the judges always had a biased opinion towards girls, so if a guy did a really hard trick, and a girl did a simple one, they would give the girl a higher score. in fact the girl skateboarder who was deemed the best female skater in the world... well I was as good, if not better then her.

I've known a few girls (neither ugly nor fat) who tried to play. They could play a few chords, but they all gave it up. Really a shame, cuz ive never jammed with a chick before. Ive always found most chicks take relationships seriously, but not guitar...and my serious realtionship is with my guitar :D

I'd have a pretty tough time saying that Jennifer Batten, Bonnie Raitt, Kaki King, Ani Difranco or any of the guitarists from 7 Year B*tch or Bottom don't (/a very unfortunate didn't) take their instrument seriously.

As do a number of women who I know from various local scenes.

I think there's a couple of different things going on here:

1). Guitar is a very male-dominated instrument and I think the issues associated with that tend to put a lot of otherwise serious female guitarists off.

2). Most women seem to care a lot less about technical, fast, mastubatory solos than men do. I think most women are more concerned with the song; the chord progression, the melody, rhythm, and lyrics. So, in other words, we're less likely to hear about their exploits unless they happen to front the band as well.

Of course, that doesn't necessarily they do any better of a job of those. Some do, but it's nowhere near a universal quality.

Of course. Just like us guys aren't necessarily any better at our fast, mastubatory solos (or even necessarily interested in them).

I'm just pointing out that your average female guitarist seems to look at the instrument differently than your average male.

i am surprised that holly hasn't come in and said anything yet.

why don't you see many guys who knit? why do more girls play flute than guys? i think part of it's social upbringing. i don't agree with the hardcore feminists that society is biased against women necessarily, so much as there are some very defined things that are distinctly male or distinctly female.

some of them are really stupid. i.e. tools, cars, etc. my girlfriend is awesome with tools... but... that's what being an architecture major will do for you. she's in a better position to build a garage than 99% of the guys out there. i work with a woman who owns a Subaru WRX STi, and not only knows all about the thing but also knows how to drive it. really well. the most common thing she says she gets asked is "is that your boyfriend's car?"

the other thing that pisses me off, personally, are things like the "whammy bar" comment. it's stuff like that that discourages girls from not only posting here, but, also from playing. I went to a "guitarists night out" thing they had at a Mars Music in Boston and went to go grab a slice of pizza while my girlfriend sat by an AC30 with a 7-string ESP (she can play a little). when i got back she had fifteen new potential suitors, and had gotten a lot of really impolite remarks; a girl that plays guitar would rather be judged by her musical prowess and ability to play than whether she has tits. and just because a girl can play doesn't mean that she's necessarily an animal in the sack or more likely to date a guitarist.

i recall there were a few times in the past that girls posted here saying hi and a lot of guys jumped on with really inappropriate comments... sad. because especially if a girl is starting out playing guitar, maybe all that she knows about the guitar world are the guys here who were like "are you hot?" and the guys at the guitar store that are crude and impolite. i wish that more people knew how to conduct themselves around a lady.

FTR my girlfriend has informed me that the only guitar she can comfortably play sitting down is an explorer or a steinberger. if she plays a strat, tele, SG, LP, etc, or pretty much any acoustic, the upper cutaway isn't big enough for her chest. not an issue for most women, she truly is extraordinary... but... if she wanted to take up guitar avidly she'd have some issues (also, straps are an issue). plus, Explorers tend to be too heavy for her to play for too long; she needs something more along the lines of a Fender in weight.

You know, that's funny. The first time I ever mentioned guitar weight as an issue on this forum I was basically told to shut up and grow a pair. Are girls 'acceptably weak' or something now? I'm 5'7, 104 lbs. A heavy guitar will damage my back if I play for very long standing up. I've had all the muscles in my upper and middle back visibly go into violent spasms after playing a gig with a paul-type guitar. If I don't even have an excuse I don't see how your gf does.

wait are you a girl? cause if you're not... and you're 5'7" 104 lbs. then there is just something wrong with that... I'm 5'8" 165 lbs. and I'm not what one would consider fat either. just well built I guess.

anyways I think Ponyone brought up a good point... I think I learned a valuable lesson today. of course I'm blonde so it'll take me a minute or two to figure out what that lesson was... oh yeah... to encourage, not discourage, a girl who plays guitar... or tries to... maybe help her out if she needs it... yeah okay let's go with that answer.

whoa there tiger... settle down... if i said something about your strength i'm sorry, but i don't think i did. i'm about 6'0 and well-built and guitar weight has never been too much an issue; i prefer a guitar to have some heft to it but i don't like them to be heavier than necessary. i don't think that anyone who physically can't play an LP has no balls; that's just friggin stupid... and ignorant.

i think this may be the thread in question http://www.guitartricks.com/forum/showthread.php?t=9599 and i don't see anyone saying anything that remotely resembles "shut up & grow a pair."

acceptably weak??? no, they just do tend to be physically weaker on the natural than guys do though there are exceptions to every rule. personally i think that everyone should be able to get an instrument that is comfortable to them. Personally I like my strings spaced a little further apart because i have really fat fingers and i prefer the feel of 9's to "manlier" guages like 11 and 12. my hands are small (the same size as my g/f's and she's 5'4) but I don't have a problem with Les Paul boatnecks; that's just the way I play. That's just me.

Keep in mind my girl also basically has two 10lb weights attatched to her chest that are there permanantly and aren't getting any lighter.

well, i'm about 6'0-6'2 (every measurement comes out differently, damn it), weigh around 210 lbs and am very well built, wear a 14 double wide shoe but have smallish hands with fat fingers and am left handed. you guys are both friggin tiny to me. big happens. little happens. we're all still human.

a agree that we shouldnt make fun of girls for playing the guitar like you make fun of them then wonder why the crap they dont play.like it would be so awesome to see a girl play guitar and stick with it but most guy's drive them aay.were putting a bad image on are hobby.like even if a girl sucks at the guitar if you give her soem good comments she'll play ,more and event ually get really godd probally better than you.so i mean if i say any of the guy's making fun of the girls i would oput them straight cause i meant that's awesome that there trying something we put off as only a male thing.

That's not it. I'm talking about something years earlier. I had a different profile on here in early high school.

Just a point of curiousity 104 is light for my height. It's 20 pounds underweight from what's considered healthy. If I could gain weight I would, but I've never really been able to.

well there is 2 options for gaining weight... one is eat more food in which case the weight you gain would be fat... or hit the gym in which case the weight you gain will be muscle, which will also help with the weight issue cause a heavy guitar will just feel lighter. with going to the gym though, more muscle means faster metabolism so you'd need to eat more food anyway. you wanna really gain weight? go to a health food store and pick up some like energy bars. then sit on your bed/couch and play guitar... don't actually use the energy you just ate.

Are you a doctor? Eating more food or hiting the gym will only make her metabolisma go up. Experts argue that obese people can't lose weight due to the same principles. Besides all of this, body fat ratio will not solve the to heavy of guitar problem.

Just sitting around and eating is what I do. I basically spend 90% of my time sitting down or asleep and I eat as much as I can whenever I can. It doesn't work.

You definately need to pick up the curl bar then In my non-professional medical opinion. As a fan of fitness I suggest that you work out to muscle failure regularly. Eat alot of carbs about 1 hour before work out, and some carbs and alot of protien 1-2 hours after you work out. Don't forget to stretch (stretching get you results faster = less work in the long run.) Drink water like a horse (but don't forget to have salt in your diet or water will kill you.) I'm not very clear on this statisic, but if I am not mistaken you can gain around 6 pounds just from water weight. Also don't eat garbage like coke or pepsi or ice cream. Stop smoking and using drugs if you do. I'm not suggesting that you do.

For real? Interesting.

I hate lifting alone. It's alright if you've got a respectable amount of muscle mass, but I would just look like a p*ssy struggling with the weights.

I still fail to see the point in this thread. Tbh, I find it a bit discriminative towards females. "Do females play guitar?" It just makes it seem like they are alien especially when it comes to guitar. It's abvious that females play guitar, there just appears to not be many of them. I bet there's a female guitarist that could wup all our asses. I wish people would stop with the "Ooo she plays guitar, is she hot?" FFS, stop seeing women as objects.

(No, i'm not female. I just feel that females are treated unfairly in this society.)

i'm a girl guitarist who takes it seriously!
i've never had a problem with the weight of a guitar (even playing 3-4 hour practices), can play pretty much anything (currently in a van halen cover band and also playing quite a bit of vai), and am neither ugly, fat or gay. :D
its the guys who just assume that all girls cant play that are constantly giving me **** whenever i go into music shops. i always get called "love" or "sweetie" and asked if i can play "frere a jaqua"...
they're also the ones who look incredibly perturbed whenever i launch into eruption.

so dont assume that no girls can play or take it seriously!!!

About girls and guitars:
I started a thread similar to this one back in my early days on this forum, although, in retrospect, girls might find it offensive, coz my allegation, which was the thread title, was that "beautiful girls don't play guitar".
I know that beauty is in the eyes of the beholder, but in my own experience, I generally don't see women who I'd consider marrying/dating/having sex with who happen to play the guitar. I see a lot of what I'd call beautiful women in lots of other places and doing a whole lots of things, but never guitarists. Plus I don't know if women guitarists appear to be fewer, or actually are fewer, but how often do you see a girl (hot or not) walking down the street with a guitar on her shoulder. Or do we guys walk with the guitars to show off, and girls aren't like that? I dunno.
All in all, I've always wondereed about girls and guitar. I guess it's coz of how I sooooo easily hit it off with guys who play guitar, I hope if it was a girl, how would it go.
If Tracy Chapman wasn't married with kids, and our paths crossed, I'd make a move on her. She isn't your standard "hot", but I dig her.
I like Jewel, but I'd probably not date her. Probably.
I like Alanis's music (what guy wouldn't a girl who says in a song "....would she go down on you in a theatre (like I would)..."), but I don't dig her sex wise.

thinking it and actually making comments like that are two totally different things. every (straight) guy who sees a girl who's hot and goes "wow, she's hot!" but that doesn't mean that you have to go "damn, you're hot, baby" or anything like that.

my g/f gets comments like "wow, you've got huge (insert your favorite slang for breasts)!" on a daily basis. if she's out walking around, on an hourly/minute-to-minute basis. let me ask you this... can you recall a time that you said to some girl "you're pretty hot" and she was like "thanks, want to be my boyfriend?" no, you gotta have some class, some panache.

it's another matter if it's a friend of a friend, they're like "oh i know this girl who's a really awesome guitarist." so you go "cool, is she hot?" and they respond with "yeah, she's frickin gorgeous" to which you go "she is the ultimate woman. can you introduce me to her?" but when you're face to face with a girl and start saying crap like that... it just makes you look stupid and kind of like a prick.

so if you can't stop... you better get familiar with the kleenex aisle at the local supermarket. drop dead gorgeous women don't go for the standard pick up lines that work on the 300lb gorilla girls that hang out in front of Hot Topic.

my g/f gets comments like "wow, you've got huge (insert your favorite slang for breasts)!" on a daily basis. if she's out walking around, on an hourly/minute-to-minute basis. let me ask you this... can you recall a time that you said to some girl "you're pretty hot" and she was like "thanks, want to be my boyfriend?" no, you gotta have some class, some panache.

it's another matter if it's a friend of a friend, they're like "oh i know this girl who's a really awesome guitarist." so you go "cool, is she hot?" and they respond with "yeah, she's frickin gorgeous" to which you go "she is the ultimate woman. can you introduce me to her?" but when you're face to face with a girl and start saying crap like that... it just makes you look stupid and kind of like a prick.

so if you can't stop... you better get familiar with the kleenex aisle at the local supermarket. drop dead gorgeous women don't go for the standard pick up lines that work on the 300lb gorilla girls that hang out in front of Hot Topic.

Class isn't important to girls. You don't know what your talking about. This is made clear by the fact that you are assuming that I even use a pick up line at all. You also assume that the pick up line that I would use is "hey baby your hot." I didn't think that I would have to explain the quote, "ooo shes a guitar player is she hot?" But wasn't it clear to you that this dialog would not have occured between the girl who played guitar and I.

People don't want advice unless they ask for it, and especially when unsolicited advice is misinformed, and lacking any clear understanding of what is actuality. In addition, if your girlfriend has you beliveing that class is an important foundation of a relationship then you need to get rid of her. How do you like that for advice?

In an Ideal world my girl could outbeat any male guitarist and own a bar....Heaven.....

On a serious note, many girls have other ambitions in life than to play guitar, they go through a phase where it`s "cool" to play the thing but then realise it`s even more "cool" to look hot and go with a guy that plays guitar, I know which I`d go for...not sure about some on here though lol....{offensive remark deleted}

My girlfriends have always liked it when I play guitar...and one of them even jammed with me on occasion (piano).

For real? Interesting.

I hate lifting alone. It's alright if you've got a respectable amount of muscle mass, but I would just look like a p*ssy struggling with the weights.

You don't need to use heavy weights as long as you work the muscle group until you can't do it anymore. Thats called muscle failure. For instance, you bench 80 lbs. After you reach muscle failure take 20 lbs off the bar. Go to muscle failure again, and then take 20 lbs off the bar. Keep doing this until you reach muscle failure with the bar alone. You will get results.

I want to make it clear that I do respect female opions veiws and thoughts, There are however differences between men and girls. Also im am not going to change myself for a girl. If what I do isn't cool enough for her then o well. Some other girls will think that its cool.

Obviously approaching a girl and saying, "your hot, will you please be my girlfriend?" is not going to attract a girl unless she has serious self esteem issues, and likes to have a pansy for a boyfriend. Which is not the kind of girl anyone wants to attract.

When I said that, "I'll never stop with the, "ooo shes a guitar player. is she hot?"" I was simply trying to illustrate that we will never stop viewing girls as "objects" as one person put it. I don't belive that objectifing is even the correct term. Regardless, we will continue to view a girl as cute before we do smart, or talented, or whatever. Its biological, just like eating, and will never change no matter how much lesbians hate it. Which brings me to this point that theres a difference between girls being upset about equal treatment and girls being upset about the way men are. If a girl is upset that men are attracted to her physical appearance and personality first, then she must be a lesbian.

i agree that you shouldnt say to a girl oh your hot want to go out if she really like you and your capable of woooing her she'll go for you besides that that probally wnt work.and tottally i think it would be awesome to have a girlfriend that would jam along with you and suff you can make up riffs together and stuff that would be the life.

good point... I think the main reason that guys will never understand how a girl thinks is because they don't realize that everyone is different, this confuses us because every guys mind works the same way (sex, drugs, rock n' roll!!! the three basic necessities of every man... and if your not into drugs... well caffiene is close enough)

damn, i missed the flamefest. hope not all of it was directed at me :(

hamberg,

first of all i don't think you understood me at all... i didn't mean to imply that you did use retarded pickup lines at all, though the fact that you said you'd never stop would seem to indicate, in the context of the conversation, that you would never stop asking girls on online guitar forums if they were hot... but... whatever.

and you obviously don't know what you're talking about if you say i don't know what i'm obviously talking about. the first thing i thought when i met my fiance way the hell back in high school was "damn those things are huge." I never said that no one should ever think that about a girl; i mean that would be retarded... if you think a girl's hot, she's hot, and there's no denying it, but denying it and being polite about it are two totally different things.

OTOH if i had said to her "damn those things are huge" i probably wouldn't be staring at them every night in bed. again, she gets that comment every day. the fact that i treated her like a normal human being and was kind to her went miles. but i'm just running my mouth at this point.

kim, the only reason guys are more confusing than girls is because they're more confused than girls... and Jolly is right, it has more to do with the person!!!

if you're thinking to yourself "i don't need to be classy/polite/etc to a girl to pick her up... i just need to drive a BMW/work out/be 14'x9'/be aggressive/etc" then you're going to attract a certain type of woman... don't think i need to say much more.

I was referring to the total cost of all the gear listed by all of the people who posted to that thread. That's still a lot of money each. That's an old thread. I play guitar *strums D then goes wild*. Yes a lot of girls are what you claim. They pick it up, strum a few chords and like woah brag about playing guitar. I also know quite a few guys that do that too.

As to being a female guitarist there are some prejudices... but i mean what can you do. It serves as a slight advantage, because people underestimate your ability, then you can show them up.

Chuck... I'm not marrying you btw.

I should have more to say about this, but I really don't. I mean I play (more like live) guitar, and I feel no need to say "wow i play pretty good and i'm a chick." Doesn't make a difference as to how much I really, really, REALLY love guitar. And yeah... I HATE YOU ALL YOU DAMNED SEXISTS! Haha j/k.

number one thats probably true but that isnt what this is about.
anyways
back to the threads point
i think men might be more prone to ubsetion

I wasn't offended, I just thought the whole concept was dumb. Because the three chord thing is true for a lot of girls, but it is also true for A LOT of guys. I bet it is an almost equal number. Guitar is one of the easiest instruments to learn the basics of, but the hardest to get really good at (in my opinion.) dont underestimate the allure of the bass....
i admit i play mostly lead these days, but i still play bass for a mate when he needs a full band. at a recent gig me and the drummer were warming up/sound checking with some funky grooves and got about 15 young ladies on the dance floor.... the guitar soundcheck promptly scared them off.

any way, a bit more on topic... i know 3 women who play guitar, none of them are amazing shredders or anything but they can solo well enough. but then all of them play at least 2 other instruments really well and have really strong singing voices (oh and they are all hot)

I couldn't decide between guitar or bass... I asked a friend and he said guitar so that's what I went out and bought... I imagine how much different my life would be if he had said bass.....

I sometimes wonder that. The person who taught me guitar for the first year also plays bass, so he could have taught me to play bass.

Hmmm.

Wow, what a heated thread this one is. I guess I'll add my thoughts to it just because I am female and play the guitar. There is no sense in having a major discussion about women without any involved in it. I don't claim to be the spokesperson for why women do or do not take the guitar seriously. All I can say is that I do and have for many years. I have noticed that there are not as many women that play and I honestly don't know why that is but Perhaps it is because there is some type of mindset out there that discourages women from picking up a guitar. I personally have encountered this in my own life and upbringing. I started playing guitar when I was about 9 and prior to that had two older brothers who were both bought guitars and lessons. Each one of them played "smoke on the water" for a couple weeks and quit. I had to absolutely beg my parents to allow me that opprotunity and was told no for a long time because I was a "girl" and they don't do things like that. I wore my parents down and was allowed lessons but it had to be "classical" as if that somehow made playing guitar more "lady-like"....I am now 36 and still playing... It's a shame how now after all these years and carpel tunnel later that I am just getting the courage to break out of the mold I was placed in to play what I love.... Now I'm not saying that I will ever jump off an amp and slide across a stage on my knees but this girl is going to Jam...

Lori, don't be put off by the large number of testosterone intoxicated 12 year old boys here on the forum.

There are also some here who graduated from adolescence some time ago and still find time to knock out the odd power chord ! I have been playing for 20+ years and the more I learn the more I realize there is to know !

Keep at it and I sure that you will get there !

May you draw inspiration from our own Liona Boyd, who hired both Eric Clapton and David Gilmour as sidemen for one of her projects, called "Personnae".

BTW: My friends got pissed at me for borrowing their guitars all the time, so I got a paper route, and bought one for myself. I found the hang-tag from it last night while I was sorting through some old boxes. The date on the back of the tag - 9 October 1968.

Haha alright i'll answer you question... yes girls do play guitar and take it seriously. I've wanted to play guitar for years but i always played piano and violin because supposively those were the girlie instruments that I should be playing. However I gave up on that whole idea and went out and got a bass... started playing that for 2 years then decided guitar was more my thing. I got my first guitar a year ago Takamine acoustic G series, love it! lol and I play as much as I can and try to write as much as possible. My older brother and sister both play guitar too and also write music. We all take it seriously and theres nothing I like more then playing guitar. So does that answer your question? hopefully!

Some girls play guitar, but it's definitely a male-dominated field. I can't think of why, except that girls tend to have softer hands (it's more lotion than genetics).

And yes, we do have at least one female guitarist here.

so there's like no girls we really know of.so if there is any girls out there feel free to post and tell us wrong but you have to be decent at the guitar just not one that wants a boy and says she can play guitar.

Hey, I dont see why i need to prove myself lol but a lot of guys here seem to think that girls are posers... well I agree a lot actually are.. I know girls that say they wanna start a band so I ask them to show me what they can do and they play maybe an a chord.. maybe a d .. and then they say thats all they need to know to play music.. not true. However I do know that there are girls out there who take it seriously . Myself and my sister both take guitar very seriously ... write our own music etc. So I can't speak for everyone else but I can however speak for us.!

Damn, this thread is long.
First of all, I know a few girls who can play some guitar. Two years ago my friends and I went camping on a mountain, and a girl I didn't previously know and I started playing "While My Guitar Gently Weeps". I was under mild influence of acid, weed and wine, and she was very supportive, so the song lasted about 40 minutes, everyone else was playing rhythm on whatever they could find. Maybe the strongest moment of the summer. Now, if only she had some more beauty and a lot more brains I would have been in heaven, but at least I was satisfied musicwise. My reason for contemplating girls who can play guitar and being interested in them is the possibility of experiencing this next step.
Second, human males and females, while "having the same rights", are different. Here's a brutal analogy : I have never seen anyone displeased about watching two girls make out or have sex. Both men and women will watch it with little or no problem. On the other hand, a recent concert/performance by a local industrial/stoner/psycho band "One Piece Puzzle" had a screen projection of some mostly ambiental videos while they were playing. The turnpoint of the concert was a song with a chorus accompanied with hardcore gay porn. The girls started leaving in shock, and guys were laughing their kneecaps off. My conclusion is that feminine beauty is more socially accepted, and as such is more prone to commercial exploitation , and it is that process, applied to music industry, that preffers beauty to talent.

P.S. Last night I saw Bonnie Raitt on Grammy Awards and she almost made me cry.

Well, I think it's perfectly obvious that females are every bit as creative and intelligent as men.
I mean, after all, the first person to step foot on the moon was a femal.. um.. no hold on...
Computers were invented by a femal... um.. no wait...
Some of the best symphonies were written by wome.... nope, wait a second..
Some of the most recognizable art and sculptures were done by wo... hmm
The car was invented.. nope.. um..,
The telephone... damn..
Televisions were definitely invented by wome......

Yeah baby!!!
I knew I was on to something when I skipped a trip with my college buddies to the world famous resort city/town of Mombasa and used the money to buy my first guitar.

Alright...heres a question.

Do girls find it more attractive if a guy plays the electric mainly or the acoustic?I find it incredibly hot if a girl plays electric well...one of my few guitar lessons was from a woman(30 something probly)she was very attractive and could shred quite well(why didn't I mention this earlier in the thread?)...

woah, there are a lot of lonely poeple out there...
Women who play that have inspired me:
Pj Harvey, Nina Nastasia, Cat Power (chan marshall), Joanna newsom...

to be honest, I'm not really into (what i see as) lowest common denominator rawk, but i think there are still some all female bands like The Donnas, Kittie, the halo friendlies, that you all might like...heheh

I am a 32 year old female who is married with two children. I am disabled with a few pain nerve disorders that effect my arms, hands and lower body. I have always wanted to learn how to play guitar ever since I can remember. My real father is a musician (guitar, keybords and drums). He gave my mother a Gibbson Acustic to give to me. He was never around until I was 21 years old. My step father smashed my guitar because he was jelouse of my real Dad. I grew up on welfare as a child. My step father got me a flying V when I was 15 years old for my birthday. But then he sold it for drug money. I never had a chance to learn. I now have a guitar that was given to me from my nephew. My kids want to learn to play to so I have to learn to teach them. This guitar is very uncomfortable for me to play because of my disabilities. But I am sticking with it and tuffing it out. When I am causing myself more pain than usual I take more medication so that I can keep lerning. I do not appreciate all of these coments about how women can't play. And if they can play then it is something sexual. Yes I do agree that men are stronger than women naturally. But the sexual coments are just uncalled for. Yes being a guitarist is a male dominated sean. And women are put off by it a lot because of the sexual coments we get. But we don't only get those coments from the guitar playing sean. We get those coments when ever we do anything in the world. We get those coments when we bring life into the world by rearing children. Then we also get those coments when we have already had our children and then go out into the work force. You men want to say that women can't do things like play the guitar because we aren't strong enough and that we don't have a pair so we can't play well that is just a bunch of BULL *^%$. This kind of sean just really ticks me off. I am determined to learn how to play because I have wanted to play my whole life but never got the chance because of what I had to go through growing up and now that I am disabled it is hard for me to learn but I'll be damnd if there is anything going to stop me now that I have a guitar to learn on. I am sorry for ranting like a woman but you know what I am a woman and you men are ticking me off!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! I am also new to this group but now I don't know if I want to be a part of this group. Yes I can play a few cords the ones that a man tought me when I was a kid before my guitar was sold for drugs and I couldn't keep going on my guitar education because of that (no money, no guitar) and yes I always did say that I could play a little even though I didn't have a guitar and I never got the traditional training. But the only reason why I said that I could play a little even though I didn't have a guitar and I wasn't keeping up with the lessons because of no money or guitar is because I really wanted to start up lerning again and getting a guitar. I was looking for a way to save money, raise two children and pay all of my bills and buy a guitar at the same time. Thank god my nephew gave me a guitar so that I could start learning again and get really good. I will never be in a band or anything because of me being in a wheel chair now (since October 2004) but I can learn and then teach my children so that they could be in a band. My daughter plays keybords and the clarinet right now and she is 12 years old. My son doen't play any instrument because he has always wanted to play guitar as well. But he can sing really well. So stop putting women down when they can play. Women also probably say that they play when they only play a little and then stop playing because of what you men always do to us when we can play!!!!!!

I realize your case is a special one as you're experiencing pain to begin with, but I should warn you to take a break whenever the guitar makes you experience more pain than usual. If not you may have to stop playing entirely.

Also, don't worry, anyone who says girls can't play guitar hasn't seen Ani DiFranco, The Great Kat, or that Xue-Fei Huang classical guitarist. Those girls could rip me UP!

Don't let the immaturity of some on this board put you off. We're not all absent minded.

Your situation is unfortunate, but I believe it has given you the determination to really learn the guitar. There's a lot of helpful information here, and if you can't find what you need, I'm sure one of us here can help you out, or at least get you pointed in the right direction. And, as Jolly said, when pain is involved, don't push it too hard... you might be doing more harm than good. It's not a race either. Take your time with it, and learn good technique. I know you can do it ;)

Im sure we have had many similar posts to this in the past...

sorry, i dont have time to read the whole post and everything, just the first few pages...
as for ugly girls playing guitar...what bollocks...any girls who plays guitar, gets an added million sexy points (well, girls and Cryptic...he's my sexy boy)
a guitar-playing girl can only be hot...I would love to find a girl who could really tear me apart on a fretboard...instead of just having to try and teach them all the time...tho that is also cool.I love female guitarists, I think there are way too few of them...theres no reason why girls shouldnt be taking to electric guitars these days.
