I know I shouldn't weigh in on this but I can't help myself.

Personally, I find this entire debate (with the exception of the working out posts....) to be a bit ridiculous. I'm going to share a little something with you all here. When I was a young(er) man, I thought a lot about the superficial qualities in the women that I would date. Heck, I even married a beautiful woman who was TOTALLY wrong for me. I thought that as long as she was stunning, I could learn to live with those few other things that maybe I didn't agree with.

WRONG!

Truth be told, when I am looking for someone to spend time with now, it's WHO she is and not WHAT she is that matters most. And I truly hope that she is thinking the same thing about me. I was told by a very smart person that when seeking a mate, find someone who you love talking to because you'll be doing more of that than anything else.

As far as do 'hot' women play guitar?? Of course there are beautiful women out there who play guitar. That's like asking the question, are there bald guys who play the harp? I'm sure if you look hard enough, you can find one or two. The problem with the question that started the debate is this; you can't quantify 'beautiful' or 'hot'. I am sure that there are women you find attractive that I would not and vice versa. And I am positive that there are women out there who may see me as a decent enough looking guy and others may shriek and run. It happens.

Try to push yourself to be better than that. Try not to objectify anyone. People are people. Guitarist are guitarists.

Sorry for the preachy tone of this response but you want to call yourself a man? Then be a man. Be the very best man you can be. THAT is what women find attractive in a man.

My Girlfriend plays guitar quiet good, and shes not ugly, in fact shes hot. i think theres a lot less girls that are ego fueled enough to try to shred, or have a desire too, but there are some out there.

I have to thank this man for posting this. I have posted in this thread. I am the disabled woman who is diligantly learning how to play her electric guitar no matter how much pain I am in. I know that when it comes to pain I shouldn't be causing myself any additonal pain just to learn how to play. But concidering the fact that I have wanted to learn my whole life but things kept getting in the way like my step dad smashing my guitar and then when he got me a new one he sold it for drugs and then now my two nerve disorders I am willing to deal with this new pain. I will never get better health wise. There are no doctors that can cure what is wrong with me or even treat it properly for that matter. I am married with two children who also want to learn to play. (One of those children just so happen to be a little girl who looks just like me only blonde and blue eyes.) I consider myself a hot woman and I have had that confirmed as well by many men. And yes you should pick your woman or man first and foremost by weather or not you can and like to talk to the person. I have been married for almost 14 years and yes that is the one thing that you do most in a relashionship. My husband was my best friend first. And it didn't take long to become best friends either. We were best friends for 3 months before we started dating. Then after a month of dating we moved in together and then 3 months after that we got married and have been married for almost 14 years now. How I knew that he was my best friend after only 3 months was because I was able to talk to him about anything. I talked with him about things I had never told any of my best female friends that is how I knew he was the one after only 3 months of knowing him. I was lucky. I was also 18 years old when I met him too and he was 27 years old when we met each other and we met at work.

I thank everyone who told me that I inspire them with my determination but not to cause my self anymore pain than what I am in because it isn't good for me. I know that it isn't good for me. The thing is if I don't practice because it is causing me more pain then I wouldn't even be able to pick it up because that right there causes me more pain too. I personally have to do this for myself because I have always wanted to. My husband totally understands where I am coming from too because he knows what my pain is like on a daily business. If I don't practice the way that I have been because it causes me more pain or if I don't even pick the guitar up because it causes me more pain then I might as well not even get out of bed because it causes me more pain. I appreciate everyone being concerned about my pain but now I have explained why I have to do it no matter how much pain it causes. It is something that I promised myself a long time ago that I would do and I always keep my promises weather the promise is to myself or to someone else.

Thank you
Sharleen

hey im just wondering do girls play guitar and take it seriously.cause i dont know any girls like that.just wondering

The original message from guitarjockey111 never asked if the girls were hot. He just asked if girls played. So the fact of the girls being hot was only implied in the first place. Can you see how you men think on a constant basis here?

Sharleen0146
09-30-2005, 12:32 PM
Only the ugly ones. :p

You see here is were it was implied that only ugly girls take playing a guitar seriously. This offends me! But I am willing to overlook some men's behavior because I know for a fact that not all men are like this and the fact that this person could be a teen ager or young adult.
Last time I called a girl a "woman" she got pissed with me and said "I'm not a woman, I'm only 25 years old", so I never did that again.[/QUOTE/]

I know from experiance since I am a woman that most women don't like being called a girl. There might be some that don't like being called a woman but oh well. I know that the younger women from 18 to about 60-65 years old hate to be called "mam". I know that I hate being called "mam". I am 32 years old. Most females I would say 9 out of 10 of us hate being called a girl. Shoot my daughter is 12 years old and she hates being called a girl but she has to deal with it because she is a girl. She wants to be called a woman or a lady. When she does become a woman (Puberty) then I will call her a lady but not a woman because she is my daughter.

You don't need to use heavy weights as long as you work the muscle group until you can't do it anymore. Thats called muscle failure. For instance, you bench 80 lbs. After you reach muscle failure take 20 lbs off the bar. Go to muscle failure again, and then take 20 lbs off the bar. Keep doing this until you reach muscle failure with the bar alone. You will get results.

I want to make it clear that I do respect female opions veiws and thoughts, There are however differences between men and girls. Also im am not going to change myself for a girl. If what I do isn't cool enough for her then o well. Some other girls will think that its cool.

Obviously approaching a girl and saying, "your hot, will you please be my girlfriend?" is not going to attract a girl unless she has serious self esteem issues, and likes to have a pansy for a boyfriend. Which is not the kind of girl anyone wants to attract.

When I said that, "I'll never stop with the, "ooo shes a guitar player. is she hot?"" I was simply trying to illustrate that we will never stop viewing girls as "objects" as one person put it. I don't belive that objectifing is even the correct term. Regardless, we will continue to view a girl as cute before we do smart, or talented, or whatever. Its biological, just like eating, and will never change no matter how much lesbians hate it. Which brings me to this point that theres a difference between girls being upset about equal treatment and girls being upset about the way men are. If a girl is upset that men are attracted to her physical appearance and personality first, then she must be a lesbian.

I have a question here. Are you a weight trainer? I know a weight trainer and he told my husband that you are suppose to start with the lesser weight and do as many as you can do for that day. Then take the next day off so that your muscles can repair themselves. Then the next day add 5 to 10 pounds to the wait that you did the day before and do as many reps that you can for that day. Then take the next day off so that your muscles can repair themselves... and so on. He told my husband with me there too (and this was before I became disabled) that if you start out with the heavier weights and go to muscle failure then you can seriously damage your muscles you could even tear the muscle so badly that it will form scar tissue that could impeade your ability to move your arm or what ever body part. Then you have to have surgery to remove the excess scar tissue to be some what normal in movement. I personally am not a weight trainer and never have been but this is what a trained professional told my husband when he was weight training.

Also most women don't want you to change to make them happy. (At least not the good women anyway.) Although when there is something that a woman doesn't like about a guy and she really loves him and he truly loves her too (This is very important to the relationship is love and an ability to communicate properly with each other) then you should be able to talk to each other to try to come up with a compramise to the situation. Like with my husband and I. My husband loves sports (ALL SPORTS) and I love Football and Hockey (ONLY THOSE TWO SPORTS). We sat down and talked to each other about the TV and SPORTS situation at the begining of our relationship. He still watches all of his sports that he likes to watch and then he got me computer so that when he is watching the sports that I don't watch I get on the computer. Now I just got a guitar agian and I have always wanted to learn to play ever since I can remember. I am disabled and it causes me more pain than normal to play but I do it anyway. Now when he is watching all of those sports I go into the bed room and paly. (Better Acousitic in there anyway.)

And you are right that men will never quite viewing women as objects. But over time I (as a woman) have noticed that men have learned to not just come out and say oh your hot let's date or anything to mean basically the same thing anyway. There are a few of you that still do that but not as many.

As far as women not thinking oh he is hot or he has a big chest or he has a big package hidden in his pants. Yes women do think that when they see a guy for the first time. But she doesn't say it to the guy. (Well most women don't say it anyway.) Most women will however say it to thier friend that is with them though. And then they will laugh about it.

There have been studies done about weather or not women think about sex the same amount of time in a day than men. The studies have found (I can't remember the statistics) that women actually think about sex a lot more than men in any given day. It is just that women (Most women anyway) don't say anything about sex and that is what confuses the men. The women (Most women) don't say anything because they are trying to be mysterious and keep the men guessing because the men like it that way. And yes most women also like a guy who has class. The young women though like to be with a bad boy for a while but then most of them learn from that mistake and realise that they want and deserve to be treated better than that.

As for this comment:
Which brings me to this point that theres a difference between girls being upset about equal treatment and girls being upset about the way men are. If a girl is upset that men are attracted to her physical appearance and personality first, then she must be a lesbian.
The women are upset about men being the way they because they want the men to evolve a little bit. We don't want men to change everything we just want men to have a little more respect for us women because we are pretty much equal. Yes most women are phisically weeker than men. But that doesn't mean that a woman can't have enough determination to get the job done by herself to prove to the man that a woman can do what ever it is. But the thing of it is we might be physically weeker than men but we are mentally stronger than men are and we can take so much more pain than a man could. I would like to see a man give birth and I would like to see a man take all of the sexual harassment and physical harassment comments that you can't do things just because of your genetics. There are things that a woman can't do and there are things that a man can't do and that is what makes females and males equal!!!! A woman being upset about a man being attracted to her looks and not her personality doesn't make that woman a lesbian either.

Both Andrew and Sharlene are right. This whole thing didn't start with any objectification in mind, of that I'm sure. My response was based more on what it degenerated into. The question was 'Do women play guitar?" Fairly innocuous. But it didn't take long for it to take a wrong turn. Normally, my blood pressure would not go up over this sort of debate but it just rankles me to see people, any people, reduced to some sort of imagery rather than taken as a whole, entire, person.

Let's put it this way; we've come a long way but we've still got a long way to go.

I think he meant girls that actually do play guitar rather than just stand around with a guitar in their hand in which case Bonnie Raitt would be the first that comes to my mind. There are plenty of others, but I'm out of touch with reality so I don't know of any off hand.

While most of the previous 265 posts  have been slightly off-topic, there are a lot of highly-skilled women listed in this thread. It should be obvious that anyone who doesn't think that women can play just hasn't bothered to look around.

Yea...thats true...The Donnas suck...but no more than say...Mest, or Simple Plan... I am horrorfied to admit that I think Anne Wilson (aeor Nancy, whichever one plays guitar) is pretty good...she may not be the best guitarist...but Heart make good music with her there....(although that could also be down to the addition of Mike Inez and Gilby Clarke to the band...former GnR and Ozzy members tend to make good music).

Either way...back to the original topic...yes, girls do play guitar(most of us who have been here a while will remember the string of posts on this topic following the now legendary "Girlfriend" post by the now legendary Cryptic Excretions (or maybe its just be that likes him...I dunno)...well, somehow that time things never got that heated or angry...) either way, we determined that for some reason or other, not so many girls play guitar...and it remains a mostly male hobbie...tho there are girls who play...and they are all hot(my tongue is still firmly in my cheek, incase anyone takes me seriously)

Yeah, it was a jab below the belt. I know by definition she plays guitar, but the quality of the music's lacking when compared to a lot of other guitarists (regardless of gender). As for female guitarists in particular she's an infant compared to a vast majority as well. Which is why I chose to belittle her... namely because I think she sucks.

And cheers to the one that plays 8 hours a day.

Now Now Settle down... :)

I haven't been playing very long - I'm not that good... But I do play everyday.. I only missed one day when I broke a couple strings... and that is another story. I play strictly for my own enjoyment - no one elses...

My father played in a band since I was born and when my parents divorced when I was younger... The music left with him. I didn't realize how much I would miss the music around all the time, and I need it.

I like all types of music - no specific type that I like more than others - it just depends on the day... I don't own an electric guitar just an acoustic for now... Although I am tempted, I am not going to go down that route until I am significantly better.

I think I answered all the questions that I am willing too..... :)
